Numi is partnering with an innovative, high-growth InsurTech pioneer that is completely transforming commercial vehicle insurance. Approaching 1 billion connected, insured miles, their real-time, data-driven platform enables smarter risk assessment and pricing—giving fleet owners the insights they need to actively prevent claims rather than just pay them. Already insuring hundreds of major commercial fleets across the UK (including global enterprise leaders and major mobility platforms), they are well-funded (£50M+ raised) with a clear mission: to become the leading insurance platform for connected and autonomous vehicles. They are an AI-first business, looking for people who reach for AI by default, stay curious about what it can do, and use it to work faster and think bigger.

THE ROLE

Engineering Lead – Acquisition Team

You'll work closely with the Product Manager to lead the team toward its goals, owning delivery, operational reliability, and developer experience. You’ll ship production code and provide technical coaching and leadership to the engineers around you (hands-on leadership, not line management). You'll also shape how the team leverages AI tools and coding agents to ship faster without compromising on quality.

WHAT IS MOST EXCITING ABOUT THE ROLE

  • Drive Core Growth: Lead a team building products that directly power the business’s expansion and determine how new fleets find and join the platform.
  • Hands-on Tech Leadership: Write high-quality, well-tested TypeScript and own end-to-end delivery to production.
  • Product Partnership: Work closely with the PM, Engineering Leadership Team, and key stakeholders to translate business goals into clear technical scope, success metrics, and delivery plans.
  • Empower Engineers: Lead by example through code, design discussions, and pairing. Coach and mentor engineers across the team to raise standards and share technical direction.
  • Shape Engineering Culture: Drive improvements to developer experience, CI/CD, observability, and release practices. Make pragmatic trade-offs across AWS services to balance reliability, performance, and cost.
  • Pioneer AI Workflows: Decide how the team uses AI—from coding assistants to agent workflows in code reviews and releases—keeping human engineering judgement where it matters most.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING

  • API-Driven Development: Integrate with and contribute to the development of RESTful APIs exposed via API Gateway.
  • Serverless & Cloud Infrastructure: Leverage AWS (Lambda, API Gateway, SQS, EventBridge, DynamoDB, S3, CloudWatch) to extend services and pipelines. Utilize IaC tools like Terraform or CDK.
  • Collaboration & Agile Delivery: Jointly lead projects from scoping and planning through to delivery and impact measurement. Give engineers space to lead projects while guiding their solution design.
  • Code Quality & Technical Standards: Deliver robust TypeScript code and act as a force-multiplier through code reviews, pairing, type-safe APIs, and pragmatic patterns.
  • AI-Assisted Engineering: Set the benchmark for AI-assisted development and coach engineers on maximizing efficiency while keeping quality high.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO THE ROLE

  • Product Co-Leadership: Proven ability to co-lead a team with a PM, taking joint ownership of delivery, quality, and commercial outcomes.
  • Hands-on TypeScript: Strong engineering skills; comfortable shipping high-quality, well-tested TypeScript in production and holding the team to the same standard.
  • AWS & Serverless: Significant experience with AWS and modern serverless architectures (Lambda, API Gateway, SQS, EventBridge, DynamoDB, S3, CloudWatch).
  • Technical Pragmatism: A balanced approach to technical decisions around reliability, observability, performance, and cost.
  • Force Multiplier: Track record of elevating team standards through code reviews, pairing, design discussions, and technical direction.
  • Developer Experience & CI/CD: Experience improving developer tooling, CI/CD pipelines, release practices, and delivery cadence.
  • AI Development: Confident using AI development tools daily, with experience helping teams adopt them effectively.
  • Experience aligning technical strategy beyond your immediate team alongside senior stakeholders and tech leads.
  • Familiarity with Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform or CDK) and operational resilience practices (observability, runbooks, automated recovery).
  • Practical experience designing event-driven, distributed systems and navigating eventual consistency at scale.
  • Background in a fast-moving, product-led scale-up where business impact drives technical decisions.

How to prepare for a job interview at numi

Brush Up on Your Coding Skills

For a full-time software engineering role, it's crucial that we stay sharp with our coding abilities. Expect technical questions that might involve solving problems on the spot or discussing algorithms. Practise on platforms like LeetCode or HackerRank to get comfortable with the types of questions that often come up.

Know Your Tools and Frameworks

Make sure we’re well-acquainted with the tools and technologies listed in the job description. Familiarise ourselves with any specific frameworks or programming languages mentioned. If numi uses React or Node.js, for instance, be ready to discuss how we’ve used them in previous projects or coursework.

Showcase Your Projects

Bring along a portfolio that highlights our best work. This could be code samples, GitHub repositories, or any side projects we’ve built. Make sure we can talk through our thought process for each project, especially the challenges we faced and how we solved them—this shows our problem-solving skills in action.

Prepare for Behavioural Questions

While technical skills are key, full-time positions also require cultural fit. Be ready to discuss our previous experiences and how we handle teamwork, conflict, and deadlines. Brush up on the STAR method—Situation, Task, Action, Result—to clearly articulate our past experiences when discussing how we've contributed to a team.
