The Tooling Engineer is responsible for providing technical input for injection, rotational or other moulding processes to ensure performance, reliability, cost control and lifecycle management of production tooling, including new tooling procurement, trialling condition setting, request for quote (RFQ) creation, capital expenditure (CapEx) planning, and early-stage tolling input to research and development designs. The Tooling Engineer will ensure tolling solutions are technically robust, commercially sound, manufacturable, and suitable for volume production and will advise junior to middle management to maintain a safe, efficient, and stable manufacturing operations. You will use discretion and judgement to provide technical and commercial input, for approval, into tooling decisions and tooling budgets and will supply accurate data to support tooling systems.
Responsibilities
- Act as a point of contact for technical support to internal stakeholders for Mould Shop tooling activities, communicating progress and requirements.
- Using Moldflow type modelling software, produce detailed designs to meet project/task requirements, validating design performance, requirements and complete system integration.
- Investigate tooling-related production issues and failures. Diagnose root causes and define corrective and preventative actions.
- Provide technical guidance to production, setters, and tool room personnel.
- Identify and implement tooling improvements that reduce total tooling cost.
- Define technical requirements for tooling preventative maintenance.
About you
- Degree level in technical subject or relevant knowledge through work experience.
- Desirable; trained in Lean and Six Sigma techniques.
- Robust knowledge and experience in tooling engineering or toolmaking.
- Strong technical knowledge of injection mould tooling techniques including the use of rapid injection and tooling systems.
- Experience supporting product design with tooling and manufacturability input.
- Proven experience creating tooling RFQs and CapEx submissions.
- Ability to review, challenge and negotiate tooling costs.
- Structured problem solving and root cause analysis skills.
- Experience with lower volume, higher margin product development or low cost, high volume.
