EDF Energy’s ambition is to construct and operate up to 2 new nuclear plants (pairs of EPRs) in the UK, the first of which is at Hinkley Point C (HPC), in Somerset. The Joint Design Office (JDO) has been created to reinforce the HPC site-based engineering to quickly respond to engineering queries and problems coming from site construction, to deliver the schedule and to deliver an increased scope of work. A primary benefit of this organisation is to save time for construction on site by having reactive answers and solutions to pursue their activities.

Reporting to an Engineering Lead within the Review & Acceptance Branch of the JDO, the post-holder will be an experienced Mechanical Engineer, contributing to the review and acceptance of engineering queries raised by the site Contractor on the Equipment scope across the CI/BOP and Nuclear Island buildings. The role will be focused on the Turnkey discipline dealing with various Turnkey contractors delivering in both NI and CI-BOP areas but will be interfaced with other disciplines and with several parties, such as the site Contractors (composed of main suppliers and sub-suppliers), Construction teams, Quality teams, Project Management teams, or Design teams (embedded within the JDO organisation on site, or in back office).

Key Responsibilities

  • Responding to General Queries, Non-Conformances, Change Requests, and Exemption Requests originating from the Turnkey Contractor on site, with the support of the Responsible Designer or site Experts when needed.
  • Provide adequate oversight to ensure the Nuclear Safety and Environmental Regulation requirements are met.
  • Challenge design decisions so that engineering and design align with the project strategy.
  • Assist in coordinating support from other external organisations.
  • Contribute to the resolution and closure of Open Points.
  • Assess technical risk and subsequently address this risk.
  • Maintain a strong relationship with EDF EPR Engineering (Responsible Designer).
  • Report operationally to an Engineering Lead.

Profile

  • Degree or equivalent in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Extensive experience in Equipment design, installation and/or commissioning.
  • Experience applying multi-disciplinary technical knowledge within the nuclear industry.
  • In-depth knowledge of the construction / installation industry.
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety legislation including CDM and Nuclear Site License requirements.
  • Experience in the understanding of welding engineering.
  • Ability to influence a diverse range of stakeholders, particularly those in a site environment.
  • Ability to work independently, be pro-active, report on and escalate relevant issues.

  • Private Medical Scheme
  • Employee Share Scheme
  • Salary Sacrifice Schemes: Electrical Vehicles, Technology and Cycle to Work
  • 18 Weeks Full Maternity Pay (+21w SMP)
