The department is currently open Monday to Saturday 07:00-18:00 and the scheduled shifts could be on any day/time between these hours. In the future, you may also be required to work on Sundays as well. Therefore, please ensure you have the flexibility and availability to work between these hours.
Working on the bank means you are not contracted to a set number of hours per week but instead work on an ad-hoc basis to suit the needs of the business and your availability.

As a Porter at our Plymouth Hospital, you’ll need to be a good communicator, as this role involves helping our patients to feel relaxed and reassured, before and after surgery. It’s also essential that you’re happy to undergo our Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks, as part of your application. You will also hold a full clean driving licence.
Job responsibilities
- Be part of a close-knit professional team
- Collect and return patients to their individual rooms, before and after surgery
- Work with your colleagues to ensure that the theatre environment and its equipment are fully functioning
- Help with the cleaning of the theatre environment and equipment
- Work in a fast-moving clinical environment
- Maintain constant and effective interaction with our theatre team
- Be comfortable with a physical role
- Be a good communicator as the role will involve patient and visitor contact
- Move patients safely around the hospital
- Be involved in the movement of goods and kit to support clinical departments, including driving to offsite locations
- Assist in the supplies department during busy periods
- Complete general handy‑man maintenance tasks when directed
- Remain flexible to work as requested to cover leave, sickness and busy periods

About the Hospital
The Nuffield Health Plymouth Hospital is situated next to the Nuffield Health Devonshire Gym, in Derriford, Plymouth and we have been part of the Plymouth community since 1971. We have 3 main theatres – 2 laminar flow and 1 digital, a fully JAG accredited endoscopy suite, a 35‑beded ward with one 4‑beded bay and one 2‑beded bay. Our outpatients department has 12 consulting rooms with a dedicated ophthalmology suite and ENT service. We carry out treatment under a range of specialities including orthopaedics, plastic surgery and neurosurgery. We were recently rated in the top 50 hospitals in the country for our total hip replacement patient outcomes.
