The salary for this role is £71,815 (inclusive of a Specialist Allowance). Onsite working is expected for 3 days each week; however, we actively support requests for flexible working. This role can be based at Culham, Oxfordshire. This role requires employees to be eligible for SC Clearance (must have resided in the UK for the last 5 years), including the Disclosure & Barring Service checks for criminal convictions and possibly a search of open‑source data.
Fusion is a significant global opportunity, with the industry growing in the UK and internationally. The future safety, security and environment regulatory framework for fusion power plants must be developed to ensure it is proportionate to the risk of fusion compared to fission. A pro‑innovation approach will support the growth of this new energy sector. The Fusion Safety Advisory team plays a key role in developing UK and international regulatory frameworks for future fusion power plants, providing technical safety advice to DESNZ, regulatory bodies and the IAEA, and engaging with domestic and international fusion groups and companies.
As Senior Regulatory Specialist, you will lead technical activities in developing fusion safety, security and environmental regulation. You will manage programme activities, advise government and regulatory bodies, contribute to strategic industry documents and develop technical guidance.
Key Responsibilities
- Responsible for fusion safety regulation programme activities and some team‑management duties when the Team Lead requires cover.
- Lead domestic and international stakeholder relationships to influence and support harmonisation of fusion safety regulation.
- Provide expert safety, security and environmental input into strategic and technical documentation supporting the regulatory framework.
- Elicit and provide input to IAEA documents on the Fusion Regulatory Framework, Safety Assessment and new Standards.
- Present influential work at domestic and international conferences and seminars.
- Lead technical input to or review of documentation providing guidance for the production of safety, security and environment cases.
Qualifications
Essential Requirements
- Postgraduate qualification in engineering or science, or an equivalent combination of relevant qualifications and experience.
- Extensive experience in producing nuclear or high‑hazard safety cases and assessing radiological, environmental and waste hazards, or COMAH safety reporting.
- Deep knowledge of the Health & Safety at Work Act, Environmental Permitting Regulations and other relevant regulations or guidance.
- Participation in regulatory interactions at a technical or strategic level.
- Led or coordinated input to national or international industry workgroups on developing safety, security and environment cases.
- Ability to communicate technical information to a non‑specialist audience.
Desirable Requirements
- Experience modelling radionuclides to estimate dose to public and the environment.
