As a Lead Asbestos Competent Person, you’ll join our asbestos technical team, leading the way in implementing and continually improving asbestos management arrangements across the NRS estate.

You’ll apply your knowledge within an exciting, varied and highly regulated industry, ensuring compliance with company procedures and a wide range of Health and Safety Executive legislation, approved codes of practice and best‑practice guidance. We’re looking for someone who will grow into a collaborative and influential team member, driving innovative, long‑term solutions that reduce asbestos legacy risks and deliver lasting benefits across our premises.

Please note this role is site based at Chapelcross site Monday to Thursday (07:30- 17:15) perfect for someone looking for a 4 day working week.

What will you be doing:

  • This role supports the Head of Profession (Asbestos) by ensuring all asbestos‑related activities are delivered in full compliance with company arrangements and all legislation and guidance pertaining to asbestos.
  • Will be responsible for developing, maintaining and supporting the arrangements for asbestos management compliance, providing authoritative subject‑matter expert advice, and driving continual improvement in asbestos management practices.
  • The post holder leads by example, promotes company values, works collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, and engages effectively with regulators to ensure trust, compliance, and best practice.
  • The role provides assurance through site‑based reviews of asbestos management arrangements, project delivery specifications, and record‑keeping to meet statutory and company requirements.
  • It delivers proactive, innovative, and solution‑based advice to support project delivery, mediate technical and compliance matters between teams and partners, and manage related areas such as land contamination plans.
  • The position also identifies and promotes good practice, contributes to training and coaching within their specialism, and ensures consistent, expert‑level guidance is embedded throughout the organisation.

Support governance and compliance by developing, implementing, reviewing, and assuring asbestos management arrangements; maintaining statutory and company records; supporting land contamination planning; and driving continuous improvement in asbestos management. Provide authoritative expert advice and proactive, solution‑based support across the business, including mediation of compliance and technical issues between projects, sites, and contract partners. Deliver assurance and quality through reviews of site and central arrangements, project delivery specifications, and identification and deployment of internal and external good practice. Lead engagement and capability building by working collaboratively with colleagues, regulators, and stakeholders, promoting company values, and contributing to coaching and training within the asbestos specialism.

Who are we looking for:

The role requires a highly qualified asbestos professional with strong academic or equivalent vocational grounding, supported by recognised specialist certifications and a proven track record in delivering compliant asbestos management arrangements. The post holder will demonstrate in‑depth knowledge of asbestos legislation, practical experience applying this in complex environments, and a clear commitment to continuous professional development through formal membership of a relevant professional body. Experience or exposure within the nuclear industry and related specialist areas further strengthens the ability to operate effectively in high‑hazard, highly regulated settings.

You will be:

  • Educated to NQF Level 5 (England and Wales) or Level 8 (Scotland), such as HND or equivalent experience, with ASBESTOS MANAGERS course and pass assessment and strong working knowledge of relevant asbestos management legislation.
  • Holds essential asbestos qualifications including BOHS P405 course and pass assessment and BOHS Certificate of Competence in asbestos (CoC), or verified equivalent course, with experience delivering asbestos management arrangements in practice.
  • Demonstrates ongoing professional development, active membership of a relevant professional body, and ideally experience working within the nuclear industry or similarly regulated sectors.
  • Desirable additional technical development, including BOHS P407 (D407) course and pass assessment, or NOCN D417, course and pass assessment, or verified equivalent course. CAR‑SOILS course attendance is advantageous.
