Reporting to: Crewe Production Supervisor / Depot Manager

About the role

We are looking for a skilled and motivated Fitter to join our Engineering Rail Division. This is a hands-on role focused on maintaining, repairing and modifying locomotives and rolling stock to ensure high performance, safety and reliability standards. Working within a depot environment, you'll play a key role in delivering both planned and reactive maintenance, supporting incident response and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives. This is a safety-critical position requiring strong technical expertise, attention to detail and a proactive approach.

What you'll be doing

  • Carrying out planned and reactive maintenance on locomotives and rolling stock
  • Diagnosing faults and carrying out repairs with a strong focus on first-time fixes
  • Completing major and minor repairs, along with approved modifications
  • Performing functional testing and inspections before returning assets to service
  • Accurately recording maintenance activities, including parts used, labour and outcomes
  • Monitoring recurring faults and contributing to root cause analysis (RCA)
  • Responding to incidents and providing technical support and recovery assistance
  • Participating in on-call rotas and meeting response time expectations
  • Ensuring compliance with all safety, depot protection and rail industry standards
  • Supporting risk assessments, COSHH management and safe systems of work
  • Carrying out rail movements (including shunting) where authorised
  • Collaborating with colleagues, customers, suppliers and stakeholders to drive improvements
  • Promoting a clean, safe and organised working environment
