The Maritime Manager provides senior leadership and operational oversight for the safe, compliant, and efficient maritime transport of nuclear materials across the NTS and PNTL frameworks. As the operational lead for maritime activity, you will oversee fleet operations, strengthen and maintain the NTS Maritime Assurance Framework, and ensure that vessels, facilities, and contracted partners meet all regulatory, industry, and owner requirements. This role requires a credible maritime professional who can operate confidently with internal and external stakeholders—including those with limited maritime or nuclear transport expertise—while driving high standards of safety, assurance, and operational excellence.
What you’ll be doing:
- Acting as deputy to the Head of Ship Management when required
- Owning and leading the maritime framework, ensuring operational standards, Owner’s Instructions, and assurance arrangements remain fit for purpose
- Providing day‑to‑day operational oversight of the PNTL Ship Management contract
- Assuring that the ship manager maintains a safe, secure, and reliable operating regime and holds all required licences
- Acting as operational SME for all marine activities, including new builds and vessel design development
- Supporting tender processes for vessel technical management and next‑generation nuclear carriers
- Providing operational assurance and oversight during new vessel builds
- Offering operational input to commercial and transport teams to optimise shipping interfaces and customer value
- Leading the environmental and sustainability plan within Ship Management
- Overseeing the ship manager’s identification and management of operational risks and mitigation plans
- Reviewing and monitoring the annual plan and budget for ship management activities
- Ensuring vessel physical protection arrangements align with approved security plans
- Sponsoring and governing key projects impacting PNTL operations
- Promoting NTS guiding culture principles of Freedom, Helpfulness and Drive
- Opportunities for continued professional development in maritime assurance, nuclear transport, and leadership
- Support for relevant maritime and management qualifications
- Exposure to international stakeholders and complex operational environments
Who we’re looking for:
Experience:
- Senior maritime operational leadership within a highly regulated, safety‑critical environment
- Experience leading and developing professional teams
- Proven track record in operational excellence and cultural change
- Experience overseeing compliance, assurance, and risk management
- Strong commercial and contract management experience
- Financial management of complex budgets
- Experience working with ship managers, regulators, and international partners
Knowledge:
- Deep understanding of maritime operations, standards, and industry practices
- Knowledge of health, safety, security, environmental, and quality management systems
- Familiarity with marine regulatory frameworks and nuclear transport security requirements
- Understanding of ship–terminal interfaces and maritime assurance frameworks (OCIMF SIRE, MTMSA, TMSA, audit programmes)
- Strategic awareness of fleet development, vessel design, and operational optimisation
