Reporting to: Lead Transport Manager
About the role
You will be responsible for the planning, preparation, supervision and delivery of safe, secure and regulatory compliant radioactive material (RAM) transports in the UK and overseas. Working closely with the Lead Transport Manager, you'll manage routine transports, support complex operations, and provide specialist input on package interfacing, cargo handling, lifting operations and radiological protection. The role sits within the Shipping department and operates in line with the NTS Quality Management System and Transport of Nuclear Cargo processes. It involves regular offsite working, overseas travel, and extended or out of hours work patterns.
What you'll be doing
- Supporting the management of the RAM Transport Cycle from initiation through to transport closeout
- Managing routine RAM transports (under supervision of the Lead Transport Manager where required)
- Delivering RAM transports in line with business requirements, schedules and regulatory standards
- Acting as Responsible Superintending Officer for contracts including storage, inspection services and package leasing
- Supporting the maintenance and care of NTS, NDA and third party transport assets (excluding ships)
- Witnessing and verifying that operational assets are maintained in line with regulatory requirements and available to meet transport schedules, including spares usage and management
- Generating and managing operational and delivery risk assessments for UK and overseas transport activities
- Supporting the development of operational arrangements for assets within designated facilities
- Supervising flask loading, unloading, handling, lifting, leak testing and transport activities at transhipment facilities, nuclear power plants, licensed and storage sites
- Coordinating the planning, preparation and delivery of compliant and safe RAM transport operations to schedule and budget
- Holding project meetings and working cross functionally to progress transport deliverables
- Acting as Appointed Person for Dangerous Goods Safety Advice to customers, consignors and consignees
- Acting as Radiological Protection Supervisor and providing radiological advice and services on and offsite
- Identifying and implementing efficiency and business improvements to support cost reduction and flexible working practices
- Formulating PUWER compliant operation and maintenance documents for assets
- Supporting Business Development in pursuing new opportunities, including feasibility studies and attendance at customer or government meetings

Training & development

- Ongoing training in RAM transport regulations and compliance (SSR6, ADR, IMDG, IATA, ADN, CFR49)
- Development in radiological protection, lifting operations, PUWER/LOLER and health and safety
- Support toward further IOSH/NEBOSH, DGSA refreshers and advanced technical qualifications
- Opportunities to work towards professional registration (EngTech, IEng, CEng, CMgr) and membership of relevant professional bodies
- Exposure to international projects, regulators and government agencies, building deep expertise in a highly specialised field
Who we're looking for
Experience
- Demonstrable experience in international radioactive material transport operations (road, rail and marine), security categories 13, or equivalent experience in highly regulated industries
- Experience working at overseas nuclear facilities, intermodal points and storage sites, or similar complex international environments
- Experience with generation, handling and management of security marked information
- Familiarity with RAM transport packages and associated operations
- Proven ability to manage and coordinate multiple activities to achieve planned outcomes
- Experience authoring technical documents in line with best practice (e.g. BS EN IEC/IEEE)
- Experience of health and safety management (conventional and nuclear)
- Experience with ISO 9001 management systems, audits and continuous improvement
- Experience conducting research and supporting radioactive material feasibility studies
- Experience dealing with quality assurance and audits
Knowledge
- Minimum: BSc Degree or NVQ Level 6 or HND with Advanced Apprenticeship in an engineering or scientific discipline (or equivalent experience)
- Minimum: Qualified Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor (DGSA Road and Rail)
- Minimum: Radiological Protection Supervisor (RPS)
- Minimum: Advanced IMDG qualification
- Minimum: PUWER and LOLER qualifications
- Minimum: NTS/RAMTUC Level 2 training or equivalent demonstrable knowledge
- Minimum: IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent
- Minimum: IOSH Understanding Human Factors and Behaviours
- Desirable: A61 Lifting Appointed Person / Advanced Rigging and Slinging
- Desirable: Membership of a related professional body (e.g. NI, IMechE, IET, CILT, CMI, APM, ITM)
- Desirable: NEBOSH National Diploma for Occupational Health and Safety Management Professionals or equivalent
- Desirable: Professional Registration (EngTech, IEng, CEng, CMgr)
- Desirable: Non-destructive testing qualifications - visual, pressure change measurement
