This is a newly created role, established to lead a large, complex project over a five‑year period supporting the development of full transport solutions for the UK Nuclear New Build programme. Reporting to the Programme Manager (Solutions Delivery Partner), you will have overall responsibility for delivering one or more large and complex projects or programmes, ensuring agreed outcomes are achieved to time, cost and quality. The programme comprises multiple work packages and requires extensive internal and external stakeholder engagement across the nuclear sector. This role would suit an experienced Project Manager with a strong background in major project delivery, government‑funded programmes, and logistics and/or technical projects in regulated environments. This position aligns to Level 3/4 (upper/lower) of the NDA Project & Programme Management Career Pathway.
Key Responsibilities
- Project & Programme Delivery: Lead the end‑to‑end delivery of complex projects and programmes, providing robust, fit‑for‑purpose solutions that meet customer and business needs. Apply flexible delivery strategies in line with NTS project management processes to ensure successful outcomes. Lead and influence cross‑functional project teams, including technical, commercial, legal and operational colleagues across rail, shipping and transport operations. Provide clear delivery reporting, including progress, cost against budget, risks and opportunities, working closely with Project Controls professionals. Oversee suppliers and third‑party partners engaged in project delivery, in collaboration with the NTS Supply Chain function. Deputise for the Programme Manager when required.
- Commercial & Governance: Lead and contribute to bid management activities, including development of proposal documentation and accountability for delivery to agreed timescales. Work closely with the Commercial function to understand contractual requirements and translate these into effective delivery plans. Support governance processes across the project lifecycle, ensuring compliance with internal and external assurance requirements. Contribute to long‑term planning activities with horizons of up to five years.
- Stakeholder & Client Management: Build strong relationships with internal and external customers, suppliers and stakeholders. Engage clients through structured project meetings and programme boards, providing transparent progress updates. Capture lessons from experience and client feedback, embedding continuous improvement across project delivery.
- People & Leadership: Mentor and support junior Project Managers and project team members. Identify and request appropriate resources through agreed governance processes. Optimise the performance of NTS staff assigned to projects.
- Financial Management: Operate within clear budgetary frameworks for live projects and programmes. Translate delivery plans into realistic budgets and actively monitor financial performance. Work with Finance and Commercial colleagues to manage invoicing and contractual cost requirements. Identify and promote opportunities to add value and reduce costs through innovation.
What We’re Looking For
- Essential: Professional qualification in Project or Programme Management (e.g. APM, MSP, PRINCE2). Proven experience leading large, complex projects with external customers. Strong knowledge of project controls, including planning and scheduling tools (e.g. MS Project, Primavera P6). Experience managing suppliers responsible for delivering defined scope. Experience working within a regulated industry. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels. Demonstrable commitment to continuous professional development and learning.
- Desirable: Degree or equivalent in a technical, engineering or related discipline. Experience of commercial and contract management within a project environment. Experience developing documentation for public and private sector bids. Experience delivering technical, nuclear, marine or logistics projects. Experience interfacing with regulators. Knowledge of hazardous goods transport.
