About the Role
At NTS, our depots are the backbone of everything we do — and that’s where you come in. As a Depot Operative, you’ll be right at the heart of our Rail Engineering operation in Motherwell, keeping the depot safe, organised, compliant, and running smoothly. You’ll support the engineering team by managing stock, handling materials, maintaining high housekeeping standards, and ensuring our facilities meet strict safety and security requirements. This is a hands‑on role with real impact — helping keep our trains moving safely, efficiently, and reliably.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Safety, Security & Compliance
- Work fully in line with Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental legislation and DRS/NTS procedures
- Carry out regular facility compliance checks and act quickly to report and resolve issues
- Follow safe systems of work when operating forklifts, handling materials, and working across the site
- Understand and comply with all safety notices, rules, and regulations to protect yourself, colleagues, and our assets
- Escort and supervise contractors on site, ensuring all documentation and statutory requirements are met
- Liaise with the Stores team to coordinate item extraction and shipping for calibration
- Stock & Material Management
- Supporting stock level management and timely replenishment of materials
- Safely operating forklifts and other material‑handling equipment
- Assisting with loading and unloading deliveries
- Organising storage areas and maintaining clear, accurate stock records
- Supporting the Material Handling Team with tracking material usage and stock movements
- Supervising on‑site fuel deliveries
- Operational Support
- Support day‑to‑day depot operations
- Maintain high housekeeping standards in line with company practice and safe systems of work
- Report defects, hazards, or issues to the Depot Manager and Facilities Team
- Support PAT testing duties where required
- Assist the Facilities Team with planned preventative maintenance when requested, ensuring works are correctly completed and signed off in relevant systems
- Continuous Improvement
- Suggest ways to improve depot processes and efficiency
- Take part in team meetings and contribute ideas that make a real difference
- General & Regulatory Responsibilities
- Comply with the Official Secrets Act 1911 and 1989
- Follow all Company Rules, Policies, Standards, and Procedures
- Meet the requirements of Section 7 of the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, taking reasonable care for your own safety and that of others

What We’re Looking For
- Qualifications
- Good general education (GCSEs or equivalent)
- Experience
- Stock control, site compliance, or material handling experience
- Working in an engineering, depot, or industrial environment
- Knowledge
- Safe working practices in material handling
- Basic understanding of inventory and contractor management
- Skills & Attributes
- High attention to detail and accuracy
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Able to work safely and follow procedures
- Confident IT skills (Microsoft Office)
- Holds — or is willing to work towards — a Full UK Driving Licence and FLT Licence
Training & Development
You’ll receive a full range of training, including:
- Core Training: Fire Safety, Manual Handling
- Systems: Sage/ERP, SharePoint, HR System, PDS
- On the Job: Working at Heights, Forklift Operations, PTS, PAT Testing
- Mandatory Training: As directed through the NTS Learning Management System
