What if your next engineering role gave you an extra day off every fortnight while putting you at the centre of one of the UK's most significant industrial decommissioning programmes? If you're an experienced Electrical Design Engineer looking for technically challenging work with real purpose, this is an opportunity to join a multidisciplinary engineering team supporting the future of Hunterston B through complex engineering modifications, system reconfigurations and major infrastructure projects. This isn't a project delivery role where you're focused on budgets and schedules. It's a genuine electrical design engineering position where you'll develop the technical solutions that keep a complex industrial site operating safely through its transition into decommissioning.
You'll be trusted to solve challenging engineering problems, influence important technical decisions and play a key role in shaping the site's future. Working within a highly skilled multidisciplinary team, you'll review technical requirements, develop design packages and provide engineering guidance throughout the design lifecycle. You'll be involved in solving real engineering challenges where your judgement, experience and technical knowledge make a visible difference. All of this is delivered through a full-time role structured across a nine-day fortnight, giving you a regular additional day away from work while remaining fully embedded in a collaborative, site-based engineering team.
What You Will Be Doing
- Develop electrical engineering solutions that support a wide range of site activities, from modifying existing systems to providing technical input for new installations and infrastructure improvements.
- Your expertise will help ensure engineering solutions are safe, compliant and practical, while supporting the site's long-term decommissioning strategy.
- Produce technical specifications, calculations and design documentation.
- Review engineering proposals and provide technical assurance.
- Support multidisciplinary teams delivering complex engineering solutions.
Who Are We Looking For?
You're an experienced Electrical Design Engineer who enjoys solving complex problems and developing practical solutions in industrial environments. To succeed, you'll hold a minimum HNC in electrical engineering, preferably an engineering degree or NQF Level 5/6 qualification and have experience delivering electrical design engineering work within industrial settings. Experience within nuclear is not essential, however, heavy industrial sectors certainly is. If you meet most of the requirements and have a strong electrical design background, we'd encourage you to apply.
- Experience designing electrical systems for complex facilities.
- Knowledge of electrical distribution and protection systems.
- Ability to review technical information and challenge decisions.
- Knowledge of CDM and decommissioning activities would be desired.
We welcome all internal colleagues to apply, whether you’re ready for a move or just curious about the opportunity. We encourage informal conversations before applying — to discuss the role, speak to your current Line Manager, HRBP or Hiring Manager. Some roles may also require full Security Clearance, which involves additional checks. For details, please refer to the Defence Business Services National Security Vetting (DBS NSV) guidance.
