As a Control & Instrumentation Engineering Apprentice, you will:

  • Support the design, maintenance, calibration, and operation of control and instrumentation systems
  • Learn how instrumentation, sensors, and control systems ensure nuclear plant safety and reliability
  • Assist with fault diagnosis, testing, and performance monitoring of plant systems
  • Collaborate with experienced engineers and multidisciplinary teams
  • Apply control and instrumentation principles to real-world challenges in nuclear safety and restoration, work competently in a technical nuclear environment, and understand and promote personal responsibility for Health, Safety, Radiation Protection, Environmental Protection, Quality, Security, Safeguards and principles of Risk Management
  • Apply their science or engineering discipline knowledge to the development, operation, maintenance and progression of technologies used for Decommissioning (e.g. remote handling and robotics), Waste Management, Reprocessing, and Nuclear Power Generation
  • Accurately observe, record and draw conclusions from data and experimental evidence, recognising inherent uncertainties and limitations
  • Apply design processes including materials selection that meet nuclear industry standards
  • Apply the standards for nuclear professional practice as required by the industry and professional body institutions

This Government-approved Level 6 Nuclear Scientist - Nuclear Engineering Degree Apprenticeship provides in-depth technical and academic training in Control & Instrumentation engineering for the nuclear sector. The programme includes:

  • A portion of your time will be spent studying at Bridgwater and Taunton College
  • Four days per week of practical, on-the-job training at the Oldbury nuclear site
  • Mentoring from experienced Control & Instrumentation Professionals
  • Training in real-world nuclear environments where safety is paramount

  • A Level in Maths (grade A to C)
  • A Level in Science (grade A to C)
  • A Level in other (grade A to C)
