Are you an experienced radiological protection and environmental professional ready to lead, influence and make a real impact? We’re looking for a Head of Radiological Protection & Environment to lead our specialist team at Wylfa, combining strong technical expertise with exceptional interpersonal and leadership skills. You’ll play a pivotal role in ensuring compliant outcomes across core and programme operations, building trusted relationships with internal and external stakeholders while driving positive change, continuous improvement and high performance across the team.

What will you be doing:

This is an exciting opportunity to take the lead of the Radiological Protection and Environment Department, providing the leadership, expertise and assurance that enables critical site activities to be delivered safely, responsibly and compliantly. You’ll shape standards, develop capability and provide authoritative direction across radiological protection and environmental matters, ensuring compliance with the Ionising Radiation Regulations (IRRs), Environmental Permitting Requirements (EPR) and other statutory and company requirements.

As a senior and trusted technical leader, you’ll work across the site, with projects and with external regulators, providing oversight and assurance while building a highly capable and engaged team.

Your will also:

  • Lead, inspire and develop a high-performing team, managing people, performance, resources and systems while ensuring radiological protection personnel maintain their competence through effective training, mentoring and professional development.
  • Champion radiological and environmental compliance, implementing company policies and arrangements and providing authoritative advice on radiological protection, environmental matters, EPR Authorisations/Permits and Best Available Techniques (BAT).
  • Provide robust oversight and assurance across site and project activities, ensuring professional standards are consistently achieved, contractor personnel are suitably qualified and experienced (SQEP), and arrangements remain effective through audit, inspection and event investigation.
  • Build strong relationships with regulators, external authorities and key stakeholders, including the Environment Agency, while helping shape and deliver site and company strategy across radiological protection, worker safety and environmental performance.

Who Are We Looking For

To succeed in this influential role, you’ll bring strong technical expertise alongside the professional credibility and experience needed to lead radiological protection and environmental performance within a complex, highly regulated environment. We’re looking for someone who can confidently advise, influence and engage at all levels, including with external regulators.

You will have:

  • A relevant qualification at NQF/Degree Level 6 / SCQF Level 9 or 10, or equivalent, together with membership of a relevant professional institute and a diploma or demonstrable equivalent specialist experience, such as ISEP.
  • Strong specialist experience gained within the nuclear sector or a similarly high-hazard environment, giving you the technical insight and professional judgement to operate effectively in a senior role.
  • Detailed knowledge of nuclear Site Licence Conditions and relevant radiological and environmental legislation, including the Ionising Radiation Regulations and Environmental Permitting Regulations/related radioactive substances requirements.
  • Proven experience of engaging confidently and credibly with regulators, such as ONR, the Environment Agency and NRW, with the ability to provide authoritative advice and build effective regulatory relationships.

Please note this is a site based role at Wylfa, North Wales and the working hours are 07:15-17:00 Mon-Thurs – perfect for someone looking for a 4 day working week.

Ready to make an impact where your expertise really matters? This is your opportunity to lead, influence and shape radiological protection and environmental excellence within a complex and highly regulated environment. If you have the technical credibility, leadership experience and ambition to drive high standards, we’d love to hear from you.
