Nuclear Restoration Services Limited (NRS) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA). NRS is responsible for decommissioning first generation nuclear power stations and research sites. NRS is also responsible for electricity generation at a hydroelectric plant.

About the role
We are looking for a compliance focused individual to work within the EHSS&Q team at Hinkley Point A. The role requires the individual to be comfortable with technical aspects and have an ability to successfully positively influence colleagues, regulators and other stakeholders. Support will be given both on site and centrally to develop these skills prior to a future appointment as a Provider of Radioactive Substances and Legislation Advice (PoRSLA).
Upcoming projects for Hinkley Point A include:
- Build and commission various waste plant to retrieve, encapsulate, condition, and store the site’s intermediate level radioactive waste (ILW).
- Continued retrievals of solid ILW.
- Demolition and de-planting of various plant and equipment to enable installation of new equipment and facilities.
- Operation of waste facilities to retrieve, process, condition and passivate ILW until a Geological Disposal Facility is made available.
- Continued low level waste (LLW) shipments to support site operations, including the processing of legacy wastes.
- Ongoing Asset Management, Maintenance and Compliance activities.
- Upon transfer of the AGR fleet, join with Hinkley Point B to support decommissioning of the two AGR reactors.
- Plan for the deplant of the reactors in future years.
As such the Site has a range of environmental interests, including:
- Ensuring the ongoing effectiveness of the environmental management system.
- Advising the Site on best available techniques.
- Ensuring compliance with our Environmental Permit through ongoing oversight, assessment, review, reporting and regulatory engagement on our radiological discharges.
- Developing and driving environmental understanding within teams, ensuring good environmental awareness and practices across the site.
The role of an Environmental Advisor requires the individual to take a strong lead directly with the decommissioning activities and project teams, and to instruct and lead on environmental standards, expectations and requirements to maintain good practices and compliance with all relevant regulations.
You will need to ensure adherence to standards and expectations through good communication and team working with site teams, providing timely advice, influence and ultimately holding groups to account on expected standards.
Please note this role is based on-site four days per week at Hinkley Point A site. The contractual hours are Monday to Thursday, 07.25 - 17.00, perfect for someone looking for a four-day week.
Key Deliverables
- Provide authoritative advice, support and guidance to the Site and Project teams to ensure compliance with company standards and relevant regulations.
- Monitor performance and provide advice as necessary to maintain and improve environmental standards.
- Support the Site and Projects in identifying, developing and documenting Best Available Techniques (BAT).
- Deputise for the line manager as appropriate.
- Ensure the production and maintenance of any required permits, reports, returns, consents and other regulatory requirements.
- Implement identified good practice and promote and deploy across Site.
- Contribute to the effective development of, and deliver, training within own area of specialism.
- Identify good practice in performance at sites and externally, and promote and deploy across the Functions/Sites.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential:
- Educated to NQF level 6 / NVQ Level 6 (or equivalent in a post related subject).
- Member of a relevant professional institute.
- Relevant experience in specialism related roles.
- Experience at a nuclear site.
- Good knowledge of Company Processes for own specialty.
Desirable:
- Radioactive Waste Advisor (RWA).
- Radiation Protection Advisor (RPA).
- Detailed knowledge of the Radioactive Substances Act/ Environmental Permitting Regulations.
- Detailed knowledge of International / ISO Standards.
- Good knowledge of Company Processes for own specialty.
