NuCana is seeking a medically qualified researcher to lead an innovative translational research programme using patient-derived tumour organoids and tumour–immune models. This is an exciting opportunity to work at the intersection of clinical oncology, cancer biology, immunology and quantitative science. You will develop clinically relevant experimental platforms, investigate mechanisms of treatment response and resistance, and translate complex findings into biomarker and therapeutic hypotheses.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading the scientific strategy for a patient-derived organoid and tumour–immune research programme
  • Developing robust, reproducible organoid and immune-cell models
  • Designing mechanistic and combination studies using clinically relevant samples
  • Integrating imaging, pathology, flow cytometry and multi-omic data
  • Identifying potential biomarkers of response and resistance
  • Collaborating with clinical, scientific, academic and NHS partners
  • Mentoring colleagues and contributing to publications and conference presentations

We’re looking for someone with:

  • A medical qualification such as MBBS or MBChB
  • A PhD—or equivalent research experience—in cancer biology, tumour immunology, translational oncology or a related discipline
  • Experience with patient-derived models, tumour organoids or tumour–immune co-culture
  • Strong experimental and quantitative analysis skills
  • Experience working responsibly with human tissue or clinical data
  • A track record of scientific innovation, collaboration and communication
  • The potential to lead a multidisciplinary translational research programme
  • Experience in biomarker development, immune-oncology, digital pathology, spatial or single-cell technologies, clinical trial samples, or multi-omic analysis is required.

This research-focused role offers the opportunity to shape an ambitious translational programme, build collaborations and generate evidence with the potential to inform future cancer treatment strategies.
