Overall purpose of the job
Our service users are seeking the services of experienced healthcare assistants and support workers who will be caring and supporting elderly people in their care and nursing homes in Northern Ireland
Job title/Role: Agency Healthcare assistants/Support workers
Job Type: Temporary
Location: Northern Ireland
Reporting to: Branch manager/ Team leader/ Nurse on duty/ manager of Agency
Job setting: Care and nursing Home.
Job summary
The ideal candidate will have at least 3 months experience (this preferred but not essential) working with the elderly in a care or nursing home setting or studying for or attained a care related qualification.
In addition, s/he will
- Have sound knowledge of current issues in care for elderly people.
- Have completed the basic mandatory training in adult care.
- Have a valid permit to work in the UK.
- Be able to complete an Enhanced Access NI check.
- Be flexible and able to work on own initiative.
Enhanced Access Check – If successful please be aware that we do have a policy on the recruitment of ex-offenders. As per the Access NI Code of Practice Nu-Gen Healthcare Agency also has a policy on the secure handling, use, storage and retention of disclosure information. Copies of these documents along with the Access NI Code of Practice and Access Privacy Notice are available upon request.
It is Nu-Gen Healthcare Agency’s Policy that any existence of a criminal conviction will not necessarily lead to the withdrawal of a job offer, but the failure to disclose all criminal convictions fully and accurately will lead to the withdrawal of the offer.
Key duties and responsibilities
The healthcare assistant may be required to work in any department of the home as stated below:
Personal Care
- Assist with all daily living activities for example, washing dressing, toileting/incontinence and assisting with mealtimes.
- Closely monitor residents who may be confused and/or who have behavioural problems.
- Assist in the promotion of continence and personal care.
- Assist in the delivery of care for residents who have a progressive illness.
- Observe care planning needs for residents and complete written daily records as instructed and in line with the company’s policies and procedures.
- Assist in framework of social activities by interacting with residents and helping them continue with hobbies and activities the care centre.
- Answer call system, giving assistance as required. Answer the door and telephone appropriately. Respond accordingly and pass on messages promptly.
- Under the supervision and guidance of senior care staff, report on the wellbeing of residents.
- Carry out regular checks on residents at intervals determined by senior staff members.
- Assist residents with personal hygiene assist with toileting bed making assist with mobility.
Kitchen and Laundry
- All relevant kitchen related duties including basic meal preparation.
- Record food/ equipment temperatures.
- Washing drying and ironing duties.
Whilst the above is an outline of the duties you will be required to carry out any other duties as may be reasonably required.
Qualifications
- Be registered with the Northern Ireland Social Care Council (NISCC)
- Other vocational Qualification or training attended in healthcare
- Mandatory Training courses
- Other additional trainings attended relevant to the role
- Right to work in the UK
- Good clinical and organisational skills
- Good Communication interpersonal and problem-solving skills
- Knowledge of the use of computers in documentation
- A commitment to organisation values
- Understanding of care management processes or willingness to learn
- Ability to think proactively and manage time effectively.
- Evidence of continual professional and personal development
- Liaise confidently and effectively with others.
- Be self-motivated and innovative.
- Experience of working alongside professionals from other disciplines/ organisations to provide diverse packages of care.
- Accountability- taking responsibilities of own actions and recognizing the implications of own actions to the team and the home.
- Conflict and relationship management skills.
- Knowledge of long-term conditions such as heart failure, stroke, neurological conditions, and dementia.
