We are recruiting for an experienced Controls Engineer to join a growing engineering business delivering bespoke special purpose machinery projects across a range of advanced manufacturing and industrial sectors.

This is an excellent opportunity for a Controls Engineer with strong Siemens and/or Beckhoff PLC experience who enjoys working on full lifecycle automation projects — from concept and design through to commissioning and customer handover.

The Role

As a Controls Engineer, you will play a key role in the development of automated machinery and turnkey systems for high-profile industrial clients. You will be involved in both office-based design work and onsite commissioning activities across the UK and occasionally internationally.

Key Responsibilities

  • PLC software development using Siemens TIA Portal and/or Beckhoff TwinCAT
  • HMI and SCADA development
  • Electrical controls design and system architecture
  • Full project lifecycle involvement from concept through to FAT/SAT
  • Machine commissioning, testing and troubleshooting
  • Integration of motion control, servo drives, robotics and safety systems
  • Supporting continuous improvement and innovation across machinery projects
  • Working closely with mechanical, electrical and project engineering teams
  • Producing technical documentation and customer support materials

Requirements

  • Proven experience as a Controls Engineer, Automation Engineer or PLC Engineer
  • Strong Siemens and/or Beckhoff PLC programming experience
  • Experience working on special purpose machinery, automated production lines or bespoke machinery projects
  • Knowledge of motion control, drives, sensors and industrial communication protocols
  • Ability to read and understand electrical schematics
  • Experience commissioning automated systems onsite
  • Strong problem-solving and fault-finding skills
  • Full UK driving licence

Desirable Skills

  • Siemens TIA Portal, S7, WinCC
  • Beckhoff TwinCAT 3
  • Servo motion control systems
  • Safety PLCs and machine safety standards
  • Industrial networking (Profinet, EtherCAT, Ethernet/IP)
