NTT DATA is seeking an experienced z/OS Mainframe Systems Programmer for a hybrid role (remote + Sheffield) to support and upgrade the z/OS operating system and ISV products within one of the world's largest z/OS environments.
Responsibilities
- Upgrade, maintain and support the z/OS operating system
- Upgrade, maintain and support ISV products primarily from IBM and Computer Associates (CA)
- Work closely with other engineering teams to ensure stable, available, and efficient systems
- Manage hardware and logical resources across LPARs: DASD and tape allocation via HCD/HCMLPAR configuration in HMC
- Security administration using RACF or equivalent
- Ensure data integrity and swift recovery: DFSMShsm policies and recall management, FDR/ABR for high‑speed backups, FlashCopy or virtual tape replication for near‑instant restores
- Optimize system throughput and response times: RMF and SMF report analysis, OMEGAMON or BMC MainView dashboards, WLM classification and tuning
- Configure and support mainframe connectivity: VTAM and SNA definitions, TCP/IP stack on z/OS, OSA adapter and Coupling Facility communication
- Execute OS and product upgrades with industry‑standard utilities: SMP/E for PTF, APAR, and deliverable management, z/OSMF workflows for streamlined maintenance, Broadcom (e.g., Topaz), IBM, and BMC tooling for fix management and compliance reporting
Skills & Experience
- Multiple years of z/OS systems programming experience
- Strong Parallel Sysplex skills
- Proficiency with z/OS tools (TSO/ISPF, USS, SDSF, JCL, RACF)
- Experience installing and maintaining IBM and CA products
- Deep knowledge of z/OS architecture: IPL procedures, JES2/JES3, Sysplex management, SMF data collection, parmlib customization
- Programming and scripting: Assembler for exits and control blocks, REXX for automation, JCL for job submission and workflow control
- Hardware and logical resource management across LPARs (DASD, HCD/HCM, HMC configuration, RACF)
- Analytical troubleshooting of abends, storage hangs, and performance anomalies using IPCS, SLIP, trace tools, logs, console messages
- Data integrity and recovery tools (DFSMShsm, FDR/ABR, FlashCopy, virtual tape replication)
- Performance monitoring with RMF, SMF, OMEGAMON, BMC MainView, WLM
- Networking knowledge (VTAM, SNA, TCP/IP, OSA, Coupling Facility)
- Experience with SMP/E, z/OSMF, Broadcom, IBM, BMC utilities for upgrades and compliance reporting
- Project management and hardware refresh planning: IPL scheduling, vendor coordination, change‑control governance
- Documentation: system diagrams, runbooks, upgrade plans, clear communication with application, storage, networking, and security teams
Preferred experience in banking or large installations, independent work, team collaboration, problem‑solving skills, availability for off‑hour support.
