What you’ll be doing:

This is a "hands‑on" engineering role that requires in‑depth knowledge of relevant technologies and operating systems.

The role is expected to provide technical expertise and guidance within the team environment on a daily basis, ensuring that workflow and customer expectations are managed at all times.

You will be responsible for:

  • Supporting the managed services team in the advanced troubleshooting of incidents within customer environments.
  • Acting as a technical resource for major incidents relating to Unix/Linux technologies.
  • Managing incidents and problems appropriately within agreed service levels.
  • Performing technical root cause analysis on reoccurring incidents or major incidents.
  • Assisting engagement with projects to ensure delivery of technical solutions are in line with the requirements of the customer.
  • Ensuring technical documentation is completed and updated to professional standards.
  • Identifying technical problems and potential service improvements across customer environments.
  • Logging calls with third‑party vendors and managing to resolution, or escalating when necessary.
  • Ensuring correct configuration of all technical components and supported technologies within the technical tower.
  • Contributing to delivering technical excellence across the wider Infrastructure team.
  • Identifying, contributing and working towards the technical and service goals defined by managed service leadership.

What experience you’ll bring:

  • Hands‑on experience and detailed technical knowledge of supporting Unix/Linux operating system technologies gained in a hands‑on technical support role.
  • Demonstrable and in‑depth experience of administering several of the following: RHEL (all versions), HP‑UX (including agile hardware addressing), SLES Linux, Solaris (all versions), CentOS (all versions), Ubuntu and Debian.
  • Demonstrable experience with LDAP/BIND/Ignite Administration.
  • Understanding of network services, storage, virtualisation, identity and access management within a *nix environment.
  • Able to create and develop shell scripts.
  • Knowledge of and experience in deploying and managing security and system patching, using tools such as Red Hat Satellite.
  • Experience supporting middleware or applications running in a *nix environment would be beneficial.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex, technical, multi‑site and multi‑disciplinary problems and incidents.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral with strong presentation skills.
  • Ability to use a Service Desk tool to manage incidents/changes/problems tickets and carry out reporting activity.
  • Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines.
  • Ability to manage conflict/challenges within a working environment.
  • ITIL qualification.
  • Professional IT certifications relating to Unix or Linux platforms.
