Job overview:

The appointee will play an important role, together with the other Clinical Teaching Fellows, in all of the Undergraduate Clinical Teaching programmes. This will involve all aspects in the development, delivery and assessment of teaching to all levels of undergraduate students. The appointee will be expected to become involved in the teaching of first and second year medical students' hospital visits (Early Clinical Experience Visits).

The Trust has a well-established Undergraduate Department with a long history of delivering medical students from Newcastle University and University of Sunderland. We offer classroom and clinical based teaching covering a variety of specialities for third, fourth- and fifth-year students. The department also provides early clinical placements and hospital visits as well as student selected components. We have dedicated teaching faculty, clinical educators and a dedicated simulation faculty. The Trust consistently receives positive feedback from students, universities and Health Education England as part of the annual quality monitoring process.

The vision of the Undergraduate department is to ensure that all medical students have high quality teaching and an excellent clinical learning experience, which relates to their curriculum outcomes.

Main duties of the job:

• To deliver and enhance specialty and generic teaching of undergraduate medical students across all year groups at all trust sites.
• There will be a requirement to travel between sites.
• To manage specialty specific teaching and oversight of respective timetables.
• To attend relevant meetings, such as weekly faculty meetings, emendation meetings, OSCE development.
• To complete mandatory training in line with trust procedures.
• To deliver high quality safe patient care through participation in the emergency department, outpatient clinics and ward-based care under the supervision of senior clinicians.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities:

• To mentor and supervise medical students in weekly tutorial or seminar groups.
• To provide mentorship and where needed individual academic support to medical and physician associate students.
• To act as educational supervisor for medical students and facilitate portfolio completion.

This post offers an exciting opportunity for an Undergraduate Teaching Fellow who will assist with development, co-ordination and delivery of undergraduate education across North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust sites. The appointee will support the Block leads (UoS) and Year leads (NU) in planning, delivering and evaluating speciality teaching, facilitating exams and attending university meetings. There will be an opportunity to undertake the Postgraduate Certificate of Medical Education; however, it is not mandatory.

This post is an exciting opportunity for a trainee with an interest in education to work in a well-respected Trust, which has gained a reputation for delivering high quality education. There will be support in furthering your own teaching development as well as the chance to work in a truly multidisciplinary team.

The post holder will be teaching across the clinical years of the curriculum (years 3-5), as well as being involved with 1st and 2nd year hospital visit students, so experience of teaching undergraduate students and simulation is essential. It is also expected that the post holder will teach in various settings – clinical placement and within the Medical Schools on various topics.

Teaching and audit are priorities for the Trust and the Education Centre is well resourced and actively used. There is a well-stocked Library with excellent IT facilities for study and research. Clinical meetings are held between the various clinical departments. There are strong links with the professorial departments based at North Tees and an expanding involvement in undergraduate teaching.

Person specification:

• Qualifications:
• Registered Medical Degree (MBBS or equivalent).
• Successful completion of UK Foundation Programme or equivalent.
• GMC registration with a licence to practise at the time of application.
• ALS/APLS/EPLS or any other advanced life support course.
• PG cert in medical education or equivalent.

• Experience:
• Knowledge of a UK undergraduate curriculum.
• Proficiency in basic clinical skills.
• Understanding of clinical governance processes.
• Awareness of NHS policies.
• A minimum of 12 months experience of working clinically as a doctor in the NHS.
• Experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams.
• Evidence of UK teaching experience.
• Experience in simulation-based teaching.
• Evidence of teaching UK undergraduate medical students.
• Evidence of presentations.
• Evidence of publications.
