Job overview: Advert may close early once sufficient number of applications is reached. The role is for a band 5 in general / gynaecology surgery and orthopaedics. The band 5 will take charge of a list and ensure the patient has the best, safest and most efficient peri‑operative experience. They will coordinate equipment, manage specimens and ensure the list runs smoothly.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities:
- Apply specialist knowledge to practice in an acute critical care area across a range of procedures.
- Provide a physical and psychological environment conducive to peri‑operative care.
- Provide care to a caseload of patients, analyse, assess and make clinical judgments; support junior staff.
- Communicate effectively with patients, relatives, carers and all members of the organisation and external agencies.
- Follow policies and procedures, proposing changes where appropriate.
- Takes charge of a designated area in theatre and occasionally the Operating Department in the absence of the Theatre Sister.
- Ensure safe use of complex equipment and pharmaceuticals and manage resources.
- Abide by legal requirements relating to the NMC or AOP.
- Assist in implementing systems such as Essence of Care and Nursing Strategy.
- Maintain accurate and confidential peri‑operative care documentation.
- Participate in research and audit and apply findings into practice.
- Initiate new ideas and evidence-based practice implementation.
- Mentor and facilitate education of staff nurses, operating department practitioners, pre‑registered student nurses, trainee practitioners and theatre support workers.
- Commit to IWL principles and flexible working patterns.
- Promote equality, diversity and tackle discrimination and harassment.
- Reduce sickness absence and workplace accidents.
- Take responsibility for personal development and create a Personal Development Plan.
Person specification:
- Qualifications: Level 1 registration OR minimum NVQ Level 3 in Operating Department Practice, Relevant teaching certificate, Diploma in Nursing or Operating Department Practice.
- Experience: Minimum 12 months experience in a relevant specialist area, Completion of competency package.
- Knowledge: Good understanding of theory and practice for orthopaedic scrub staff.
