Main duties of the job:

The Multi Skilled Electrical / Mechanical Engineering Apprentice will undertake a structured four-year HEST apprenticeship combining formal technical education with supervised workplace learning. They will take responsibility for their learning and development, meet agreed training targets and maintain regular communication with supervisors, assessors and the training provider.

Under the supervision of suitably qualified and experienced engineers, the apprentice will learn to diagnose faults and support the maintenance, repair, installation and testing of electrical and mechanical plant, equipment and building services. Duties will progressively include planned preventative maintenance, statutory inspections and testing, minor improvements, use of engineering drawings and specifications, selection of materials, safe use of tools and accurate completion of maintenance records. All work will remain within the apprentice’s assessed competence and will follow Trust procedures, risk assessments, permits to work, infection prevention requirements and relevant health and safety standards.

The apprentice will support planned preventative and statutory maintenance while developing an understanding of the Trust’s compliance responsibilities. Under appropriate supervision, they will follow risk assessments, permits to work, safe systems of work, infection prevention controls and personal protective equipment requirements. All duties will remain within their assessed competence, with faults, hazards, incidents and work outside their authority escalated promptly. Particular attention will be given to the risks of working in complex, occupied healthcare buildings where electrical and mechanical systems directly support patient safety and essential clinical services.

The apprentice will communicate professionally with Estates colleagues, clinical departments, contractors, training providers and service users to arrange access, explain work, minimise disruption and provide accurate progress updates. They will learn to plan work safely, select suitable tools and materials, complete work orders and maintain accurate technical, compliance and apprenticeship records. The postholder will be expected to follow approved technical guidance, meet agreed quality standards, use Trust resources responsibly and contribute to service performance, audits and continuous improvement.

The apprentice will comply with infection prevention, safeguarding, confidentiality, equality and professional conduct requirements and will treat patients, visitors and colleagues with dignity and respect. Through supervised rotations and structured learning, they will develop electrical and mechanical competence, acquire detailed knowledge of the Trust’s buildings and infrastructure, and support the transfer of knowledge from experienced engineers. The role will contribute to a sustainable future workforce, improved succession planning and a balanced engineering skill mix, with any future progression into a trained engineering post subject to successful completion of the apprenticeship, demonstrated competence, organisational need and the appropriate recruitment process.
