Job overview: The post holder will deliver autonomous clinical practice to a consultant level within Breast Services. This will include interpretation of, and reporting of all mammographic and ultrasound imaging of the breast and axilla. The post holder will also be responsible for breast core biopsies, aspirations, localisations and vacuum excisions under x-ray and ultrasound guidance. They will fulfil the quality standards required by the National Health Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP) and confirm this by undertaking audit and clinical governance activities. The post holder will be required to lead, supervise, mentor and develop other team members, providing a model of expert practice in terms of knowledge and experience and use clinical research as a basis to extend the scope of practice within the unit. They will act as a source of expert professional advice to medical consultants, other professionals, multi-disciplinary groups, patients and their carers. They will be required to provide cover for the Radiology Breast Consultants duties and clinics when they are unavailable in order to ensure the continuity of the service. The post holder will be required to work across all University Hospital Tees Sites where Breast Services are delivered.
Main duties of the job:
- To work under the clinical direction and overall clinical supervision of the Director of Breast Screening and to comply with departmental policy.
- To read a minimum of 5000 mammograms per year in accordance with NHSBSP QA guidelines.
- To participate in the unit’s double reading protocol such that each report has equal status to that of the radiologist.
- To participate in arbitration / consensus and review of interval and previously assessed cancer as per NHSBSP guidelines.
- To independently run symptomatic clinics in accordance with departmental policy and RCR guidance.
- To independently run assessment clinics in accordance with departmental policy and NHSBSP guidance.
- To independently and safely perform interventional procedures such as local anaesthesia administration, skin incisions, ultrasound guided cyst aspirations, ultrasound and stereotactic guided core biopsies, localisations and vacuum biopsies and excisions.
- To independently perform ultrasound and stereotactic guided localisations using savi scout as per departmental policy.
- To attend Breast MDT regularly.
- To regularly participate in audit, quality improvement processes and teaching of trainees within the department.

Person specification:
Qualifications and Training:- Masters level qualification in Mammography or Masters level qualification in Medical Ultrasound.
- Qualification in 3 advanced practice disciplines; Image Interpretation, Interventional Procedures, Ultrasound of the Breast.
- Clinical Registration with the HCPC.
- Evidence of Continuing Professional Development.
- Qualification/training in clinical examination of the Breast.
- PGD for insertion and management of peripheral venous cannula (or working towards).
- Advanced communication skills.
- Post graduate courses/qualifications in management/leadership.
- Post graduate teaching qualification.
- If from mammography background, significant mammography experience at Advanced Practitioner level.
- If from sonography background, significant experience of autonomous practice as a Sonographer.
- Evidence of a minimum of 12 months’ autonomous practice post qualification of 3 advanced practice disciplines in Breast (i.e. Image interpretation, Interventional Procedures, Breast Ultrasound).
- Experience of staff Management.
- Significant experience of patient review and assessment, including history taking and clinical examination.
- Experience of working with clinicians and securing their engagement.
- Experience of participation in audit.
- Experience of teaching of post graduate students (of relevant backgrounds).
- Significant experience of working within Mammography and the NHSBSP if from mammography background.
- If from sonography background, some experience of US guided intervention.
- Experience of research and publication/presentation of results.
- Experience of successfully leading a team through change.
