Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD) is seeking two Staff Interpreters to deliver high-quality interpreting services across our health facilities and community settings. These roles support accurate communication between health professionals and patients who are Deaf, hearing impaired, or from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds.

Two positions are available:

  • 1 x Staff Interpreter – Arabic
  • 1 x Staff Interpreter – Dari/Pashto

Location: Hunter New England Local Health District (travel across HNELHD required).

Employment Type: Temporary Part time until 2029.

Position Classification: Interpreter Grade 2.

Hours: 24 per week.

Remuneration: $69,364 - 76,622 per annum + superannuation.

The successful applicants will play a vital role in ensuring patients can access safe, inclusive and effective healthcare through clear and culturally appropriate communication.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Provide accurate, confidential interpreting services across clinical and community healthcare settings
  • Apply a range of interpreting modes including dialogue, consecutive, simultaneous, chuchotage, group and sight translation
  • Deliver interpreting services face-to-face, via telephone and video platforms
  • Support culturally safe and patient-centred care
  • Maintain accurate documentation and comply with medical record and administrative procedures
  • Participate in ongoing training, professional development and service improvement initiatives
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary healthcare teams

About You

  • Fluency and literacy in English and relevant community language(s)
  • Fluency and literacy in Arabic and/or Dari/Pashto, including the ability to interpret accurately in clinical and healthcare settings
  • Highly developed communication skills with strong cultural awareness and sensitivity
  • Proven ability to interpret effectively in fast-paced clinical and healthcare environments
  • Capable of managing competing priorities while maintaining attention to detail
  • Comfortable working both independently and collaboratively across diverse settings
  • Flexible, reliable, and adaptable to changing service demands
  • Passionate about improving patient experiences through clear, respectful, and culturally appropriate communication
