As the Aboriginal Cancer Care Project Officer, you'll work alongside the Aboriginal Cancer Care Coordinator and a dedicated multidisciplinary Cancer Services team to strengthen cancer care pathways and improve the experience of Aboriginal people affected by cancer.

About the Team

Based at the Northwest Cancer Centre in Tamworth, you'll join a collaborative and supportive Cancer Services team committed to delivering high-quality, culturally responsive care. Working closely with the Aboriginal Cancer Care Coordinator, Nurse Manager of Cancer Services and the Aboriginal Health Team across the District, you'll be supported by experienced professionals who value partnership, innovation and continuous improvement.

About the Role

This is a unique opportunity to influence cancer care beyond individual patient support by contributing to projects that improve services across the health system.

In this role, you will:

  • Support the development and implementation of a culturally safe Aboriginal Cancer Model of Care toolkit.
  • Assist with project planning, coordination and reporting for Aboriginal cancer care initiatives.
  • Map and strengthen cancer care pathways to improve access for Aboriginal patients and families.
  • Build and maintain strong partnerships with Aboriginal communities, Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations and healthcare providers.
  • Help identify and address barriers that Aboriginal people experience when accessing cancer care.
  • Develop practical resources and provide advice to support staff in implementing culturally responsive models of care.
  • Contribute to service improvement initiatives that enhance cancer care across Hunter New England Local Health District.

About You

You are passionate about improving Aboriginal health outcomes and bring strong community connections, cultural knowledge and relationship-building skills. You enjoy collaborating with others, coordinating projects and finding practical solutions that make a genuine difference.

You'll also demonstrate:

  • A strong connection to Tamworth and the surrounding Aboriginal community.
  • Knowledge of Aboriginal health services and the barriers Aboriginal people may experience when accessing healthcare.
  • Excellent communication, advocacy and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Experience supporting project coordination, health program planning or service development.
  • Qualifications in Aboriginal Primary Health Care, Health Administration, Community Services, Project Management or another relevant health discipline, or equivalent experience (highly regarded but not essential).
  • The ability to develop practical resources and support staff to effectively implement the Aboriginal Cancer Model of Care toolkit.

Essential Requirements

  • This is an Identified Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander position. Applicants for this position must be of Aboriginal descent through parentage, identification as being Aboriginal and being accepted in the community as such. Exemption is claimed under Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977.

  • Eligible to drive in NSW and the ability to travel for work purposes.

What you'll be doing

The Aboriginal Cancer Care Project Officer provides administrative, coordination and project support to the Aboriginal Cancer Care Coordinator and associated cancer care initiatives across Hunter New England Local Health District. Working in collaboration with Cancer Services, Aboriginal Health teams, Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs), community stakeholders and the Cancer Institute NSW, the position supports activities that improve access to culturally safe cancer care for Aboriginal people affected by cancer.
The role assists with the coordination and implementation of care-related activities, project administration, data collection and reporting, stakeholder communication, meeting and event coordination, and monitoring of project activities. The position contributes to service improvement initiatives by supporting implementation activities, maintaining project documentation, monitoring progress against agreed actions, assisting with reporting requirements, and escalating strategic or system-level issues to the Aboriginal Cancer Care Coordinator as appropriate.
Through these functions, the Aboriginal Cancer Care Project Officer supports the delivery of culturally responsive cancer care services and contributes to improving the experience and outcomes of Aboriginal people affected by cancer.
