The Role

Responsible for the planning, coordination and delivery of assigned commissioning activities and work packages, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently and in accordance with approved procedures, technical requirements, programme objectives and site standards.

The Senior Commissioning Engineer shall maintain ownership of assigned activities from planning and readiness through execution, documentation and formal completion, ensuring records are accurate and up to date, progress is monitored, and risks, issues and constraints are communicated to relevant stakeholders.

Key Objectives

  • Commissioning planning and delivery: Plan, coordinate and deliver day-to-day on-site commissioning activities and off-site commissioning planning for nominated projects and work packages, ensuring that activities are appropriately sequenced, resourced and aligned with programme requirements.
  • Ownership of assigned work packages: Maintain responsibility and accountability for the effective delivery of assigned commissioning activities, including monitoring progress, identifying constraints, managing outstanding actions and escalating issues that may affect safety, quality, programme or successful completion.
  • Commissioning documentation and work controls: Ensure that all commissioning documentation and associated work controls are produced, reviewed, maintained and submitted in accordance with applicable procedures and required timescales. This includes responsibility for the accurate production and ongoing upkeep of Work Authorisation Forms (WAFs), where applicable, ensuring that they reflect the planned and actual scope of work and remain current throughout the relevant activities.
  • Testing and technical verification: Plan, coordinate, undertake and oversee commissioning tests within the limits of the role's competence and authorisation. Ensure that testing is conducted against approved procedures, technical specifications and acceptance criteria, with results accurately recorded and any defects, deviations or deficiencies identified and progressed to resolution.
  • Commissioning readiness and interfaces: Verify that the necessary prerequisites, documentation, resources, access arrangements and interfaces have been addressed before commissioning activities commence. Liaise with project management, design, construction, installation teams, suppliers, facility representatives and other commissioning disciplines to resolve dependencies and facilitate safe and effective delivery.
  • Progress monitoring and reporting: Maintain accurate and current records of commissioning progress, planned and actual activities, forecast completion dates, outstanding actions, risks, dependencies and resource requirements. Provide regular and accurate project updates and commissioning reports, identifying potential delays or deviations from programme and escalating matters requiring management intervention.
  • Completion, close-out and handover: Produce and coordinate Commissioning Completion Reports and other required close-out documentation. Ensure that outstanding defects, commissioning reservations, actions and documentation requirements are appropriately recorded, tracked and progressed, supporting formal acceptance and handover in accordance with applicable project and site requirements.
  • Technical assurance and quality: Ensure that commissioning activities and deliverables meet the required technical, quality and procedural standards. Identify and challenge deficiencies, apply appropriate change-control arrangements and seek the necessary technical review or approval where required. Support audits, reviews and lessons-learned activities to promote continuous improvement and right-first-time delivery.
  • Design for commissioning and asset integration: Provide commissioning input during design, installation and project delivery to ensure that systems are accessible, testable and capable of being commissioned effectively. Support the safe integration of new or modified assets into existing facilities without introducing unacceptable risks or detriment to operational performance or service requirements.
  • Supplier and off-site testing coordination: Coordinate and monitor supplier-led or off-site testing and pre-commissioning activities within the assigned scope. Ensure that relevant test evidence, outstanding actions and required documentation are obtained and incorporated into the commissioning records.
  • Technical leadership and collaboration: Provide technical guidance and support to other commissioning personnel, sharing knowledge and good practice. Work collaboratively across commissioning disciplines and with project stakeholders to resolve technical issues, improve delivery efficiency and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Health, safety, quality and environmental compliance: Ensure that all activities are undertaken in accordance with NSG's QSHEW requirements, applicable AWE procedures, approved work controls and relevant site rules. Maintain personal accountability for safe working practices and promptly report hazards, non-conformances, incidents or other matters requiring escalation.
