Overview
The Children’s Alternative to Admission Team (CATAT) provides intensive support for service users aged 12–18 who are at risk of admission to hospital. Their goal is to avoid admission whenever possible and to facilitate discharge so that any admission is as short as possible. They deliver a range of multidisciplinary interventions in a variety of locations to best meet the needs of the young person and their families or carers. Service is available seven days a week from 8am to 8pm. The intervention is initially offered for six weeks, after which the team reviews the need for ongoing support; if required, an additional six‑week period may be provided and reviewed again. Children under CATAT also work with one of the CAMHS teams in the Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust to support the young person. CATAT aims to support recovery and provide less restrictive options for young people in the community, offering an alternative to inpatient psychiatric admission.
Responsibilities
- Provide intensive multidisciplinary support to service users aged 12–18 who are at risk of hospital admission.
- Avoid admission whenever possible and facilitate timely discharge from hospital.
- Design and deliver interventions over an initial 6‑week period, reviewing effectiveness and deciding on further 6‑week periods as needed.
- Collaborate with other teams within the Trust, including the CAMHS teams, to support the young person and their family.
- Work across a variety of locations to meet the needs of the young person and their carers.
