About The Role

Please note that this role will not require office presence, but rather presence within one of our labs and / or Datacenters. The Lab Services Engineer will support the day‑to‑day operation, maintenance, and readiness of Nscale’s lab environments, ensuring development systems and infrastructure are well looked after and available to support engineering and platform teams. This role is hands‑on and focused on the practical delivery of lab services, including hardware deployment, lab organisation, troubleshooting, asset management, and environment readiness. The Lab Services Engineer will help ensure that lab environments can support current and future hardware requirements, including next‑generation GPU infrastructure. The role will also support the use of internal automation and tooling to bring up, validate, and manage clusters in development environments. Working closely with senior engineers and cross‑functional teams, this person will help maintain high standards across the lab while contributing to improvements in reliability, efficiency, and operational consistency.

Responsibilities

  • Support the day‑to‑day running of lab environments to ensure they are organised, operational, and ready for use.
  • Install, rack, cable, configure, and maintain lab hardware, including servers, networking equipment, and supporting infrastructure.
  • Assist with hardware bring‑up, diagnostics, validation, and replacement activities.
  • Monitor and maintain lab conditions and physical requirements, including power usage, cooling considerations, cabling, and space utilisation.
  • Support asset tracking, stock control, equipment handling, and hardware lifecycle processes.
  • Use internal automation and tooling to help provision, validate, and manage lab‑based clusters and development environments.
  • Help dog‑food cluster lifecycle and infrastructure tooling by using it in operational scenarios and feeding back issues or improvement opportunities.
  • Troubleshoot lab‑related hardware, networking, and environment issues and escalate where appropriate.
  • Maintain lab documentation, inventories, setup guides, and operational runbooks.
  • Follow defined standards for safety, security, change control, and lab access.
  • Work closely with engineering, platform, and infrastructure teams to support development and test requirements.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of lab processes, tooling, and operational practices.

About You

  • Good practical understanding of server hardware, networking, cabling, and general infrastructure operations.
  • Familiarity with GPU‑based systems or a strong interest in learning the operational requirements of next‑generation GPU infrastructure.
  • Hands‑on approach to troubleshooting hardware and infrastructure issues.
  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail, particularly in physical environments and asset handling.
  • Ability to follow operational processes and maintain accurate records and documentation.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively with technical teams.
  • Willingness to learn and use infrastructure automation, provisioning, and cluster management tooling.
  • Basic knowledge of Linux systems, networking concepts, and infrastructure operations would be beneficial.
  • A proactive and reliable approach to supporting shared technical environments.
  • Experience working in a lab, data centre, hardware operations, IT infrastructure, or similar hands‑on technical environment.
  • Experience installing and supporting server or networking equipment.
  • Experience with hardware diagnostics, replacements, and physical deployment activities.
  • Experience supporting development, test, or pre‑production environments is desirable.
  • Exposure to automation, provisioning tools, or infrastructure management workflows would be beneficial.
  • Experience with GPU infrastructure, HPC, or large‑scale compute environments would be advantageous, but not essential if backed by strong relevant infrastructure experience.
