The Mechanical Building Services Engineer will support the mechanical infrastructure and building services engineering of infrastructure and accommodation/welfare projects across Urenco UK assets. Acting as an intelligent customer, the role is embedded within a multi-disciplinary infrastructure project team responsible for delivering a diverse portfolio of projects across site.
The postholder will provide technical leadership, design input, and assurance across the full project lifecycle, from feasibility through to handover.
Key Responsibilities
- Project & Design Management
- Produce user requirements, scopes of work, technical specifications, and tender documentation
- Develop design management plans and review existing procedures
- Grade and categorise projects and systems in terms of quality, hazard, environmental impact, and complexity
- Identify technical constraints and applicable statutory requirements
- Undertake feasibility studies, optioneering assessments, and initial design scoping
- Carry out scoping and detailed mechanical design calculations
- Propose and implement solutions aligned with sustainability, green credentials, and net-zero targets
- Technical Assurance & Delivery
- Draft RFQs and review contractor responses
- Respond to RFIs and technical queries (TQs)
- Review third-party design packages and accept contractor design documentation
- Provide day-to-day technical oversight of contractor delivery
- Lead and contribute to single- and multi-discipline design reviews
- Ensure compliance with safe systems of work and risk management procedures
- Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement
- Work closely within a multi-disciplinary project team, liaising with other engineering disciplines
- Provide sound technical judgement and adapt designs where required to meet project needs
Experience & Qualifications
Essential
- HND or BEng in an appropriate engineering discipline (Building Services or similar preferred)
- Minimum of 7 yearsβ experience as a mechanical design engineer for a consultancy or Design & Build contractor
- Strong, all-round practical knowledge of mechanical building services, including:
- Domestic hot and cold water systems
- Foul water drainage
- Low Temperature Hot Water (LTHW)
- Chilled Water (CHW)
- Refrigerants, condensate, and natural gas systems
- Ventilation, air conditioning, and comfort cooling systems (e.g. VRF, fan coils, CHW systems)
Desirable
- Knowledge of relevant standards and statutory requirements (e.g. Building Regulations, Water Regulations, Gas Regulations)
- Experience working within regulated or high-hazard environments (nuclear experience advantageous but not essential)
- Ability to review, adapt, and develop engineering solutions
- Familiarity with AutoCAD
- Awareness or experience of 3D modelling tools such as Revit, Navisworks, or Inventor
