The Company

Our client is a leading name in several fields of manufacturing, with a major European and UK presence spanning numerous countries. As part of the continued growth of the business we are presently seeking a Health, Safety & Environmental Manager to lead health and safety activities at their Corby site.

Job Purpose

  • Working with business leads, SHE personnel and the broader organisation to embed a “zero harm” culture across Corby.
  • To identify and embed the processes, behaviours and protocols that will keep our employees, contractors and other visitors to our sites safe.
  • To ensure SHE standards are monitored and met in each of our factories in Corby.
  • Responsible for maintaining and improving the companies Health, Safety and Environmental Management System (SHERPA) and ensuring SHE objectives are completed in line with the SHE policies and Annual plans.

Job Summary

We believe passionately that no employee should ever leave work with an injury. The SHE Manager is responsible for embedding an organisational culture that instils this “zero harm” philosophy across offices, production areas, warehouse, etc. Driving accidents down to zero will require engagement across a number of activities, including but not limited to: behavioural safety, process safety engineering, site-based risk reviews, compliance audits, and putting in place programmes to substantially mitigate or, where possible, negate risk. The SHE Manager will also work with site management teams to ensure regulatory compliance across SHE (including permit management and audits from regulators on compliance) taking responsibility for both day to day performance and strategic planning. This includes reporting SHE key performance indicators both internally and to Group, liaising with enforcement bodies, collecting necessary data, supporting investigations and ensuring they are thorough and completed in a timely manner whilst also ensuring risk assessments, Safe Working Operating Procedures and Training is up to date and maintained. In addition, the role requires Waste Management to ensure the right waste type is being disposed of in the correct and most efficient channel, identifying new opportunities as they arise.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Working with the sites management teams, wider SHE personnel and the broader organisation to embed a “zero harm” culture across Corby. This includes focussing on:
    • Behavioural Safety
    • Process Safety Engineering
    • Site-based risk reviews
    • Compliance audits
  • Set high standards for policies, processes and protocols on all safety-related matters.
  • Complete required monthly management, safety and environmental reviews and audits, prepare and circulate all necessary reports.
  • Participate in internal and external audits ensuring compliance to company standards.
  • Ensuring maintenance of required standards, including existing ISO certifications. Remain ‘audit-ready’ at all times.
  • Ensure regulatory requirements are met on all SHE related matters including process safety and environmental permits.
  • Maintain SHE Management System (SHERPA).
  • Stakeholder and management of internal systems and software.
  • Analysis of SHE performance, identifying trends and deficiencies with a commitment to improved performance through implementation of corrective actions.
  • Drive for action completion of SHE related activities.
  • Support SHE accident and incident investigations ensuring completion in a timely fashion and communicated to the right levels, producing “lessons learnt” materials that can be shared across the broader group to prevent the risk of accidents reoccurring.
  • Organise, facilitate and ensure inductions for new employees, contractors and visitors.
  • Organise and facilitate SHE related training.
  • Arrange and monitor Environmental permits and exemptions, reporting accurate results to the applicable enforcement bodies.
  • Complete annual Packaging waste return and quarterly Plastic packaging tax return.
  • Ensure Waste disposal file is maintained.
  • Management of Climate Change agreements and energy usage across site.
  • Engage with employees on SHE related topics to encourage 2-way communication flows and an open-door policy as a point of contact for the site.
  • Manage information requirements in connection with Employee liability claims.
  • Ensure training records are maintained and kept up to date across site.
  • Ensure suitable PPE is sourced and provision managed and available as required.
  • Liaise with Occupational Health to manage the Health Surveillance program.
  • Attend other sites as required by the business.

Experience Required

Essential

  • Has led SHE programmes that have demonstrably resulted in long-term behaviour change.
  • Is confident with SHE rules within the UK including environmental permit requirements.
  • Can demonstrate experience of coaching “through the line” with credibility from the “shop floor” to management.
  • Is analytical and can demonstrate having used quantitative and qualitative data to make better SHE-related decisions.
  • Can demonstrate having adopted a project management and change management approach to longer term culture change programmes.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English.
  • Ability to communicate at all levels including meetings and presentations.
  • Ability to prioritise work towards set goals.
  • Ability to work well under pressure.
  • Knowledge/experience of ISO management systems.
  • 50001 Level 3 Environmental Qualification – IEMA cert. or similar.
  • Computer literacy, demonstrates competence in Microsoft Office software, ERP and data management software programs.

Desirable

  • Level 5 (+) Environmental qualification.
  • Level 5 Management Qualification or above.
