We are seeking a Senior Officer to join the General Counsel & Risk Team in London on a fixed‑term contract. The position focuses on Client & Matter Intake and reports to a Risk Advisor. The selected candidate will work a roster that includes once a week support for a later shift (2pm – 10pm) covering time zones Monday to Friday.
Key Responsibilities
- Managing higher‑risk conflict queries: conduct conflict searches, analyse reports, recommend courses of action to senior management and drive issues to resolution.
- Ensuring new business intake aligns with the firm’s global strategy and complies with existing client and commercial parameters.
- Liaising with and assisting the Compliance Teams at Norton Rose Fulbright member firms in Canada, USA and South Africa regarding potential conflicts.
- Providing training support and ongoing assistance to General Counsel & Risk Officers in resolving conflict issues.
- Acting as the point of escalation between General Counsel & Risk Officers and lawyers, offering recommendations and drafting key risk advice.
- Keeping fee earners updated on the resolution of their conflict issues and communicating policy updates, training, and key business updates.
- Advising partners, lawyers and staff on the firm’s policies and procedures.
- Providing critical analysis of risk assessments on matters, including those in high‑risk jurisdictions, and recommending acceptance or rejection to the Head of Compliance and senior management.
Other Tasks
- Explaining to fee earners and PAs how to comply with regulatory requirements and firm policies.
- Guiding and training fee earners and PAs on the use of compliance systems.
- Supporting the Senior Risk & Compliance Manager and Head of Compliance with various compliance‑related tasks as required.
Skills and Experience Required
- Interest and experience in risk and compliance, with an understanding of commercial, political and risk issues affecting the firm.
- Strong interpersonal skills: ability to interact with senior management and partners.
- Advanced computer and technology skills.
- Excellent workload and project management, organisational skills, and attention to detail.
- Team player with effective communication, research aptitude and familiarity with online research tools.
- Clear written and oral communication; ability to draft complex issues and explain them simply.
- Sound commercial and risk judgment; flexibility to think “outside of the box”.
- Minimum two years’ experience in a compliance/legal function; willingness to work flexible hours.
- Law degree or other relevant qualification (desirable).
