About the role:

We are currently seeking a self-motivated and professional individual to join our team as a Trading Standards Officer within the Retail and industrial team of the Trading Standards service which is part of the Planning & Public Protection Department in the Environment & Regeneration Directorate. Our Trading Standards team plays a vital role in protecting consumers, supporting local businesses, and ensuring compliance with legislation across the County Borough. The team works across a wide and varied regulatory landscape including food standards, feed hygiene, product safety, petroleum and legal metrology. You will be part of a supportive and experienced service that is committed to maintaining high standards and delivering positive outcomes for our communities.

As a Trading Standards Officer, you will support the delivery of a comprehensive Trading Standards service, undertaking inspections, investigations, and enforcement activities to ensure compliance with relevant legislation. Your daily routine will include:

  • Carrying out inspections and audits of commercial premises
  • Investigating complaints and suspected breaches of legislation
  • Providing advice and guidance to businesses on regulatory compliance
  • Preparing reports and legal documentation relating to enforcement activity
  • Undertaking sampling and evidence gathering activities
  • Working with colleagues and partner organisations on regulatory matters

About you:

Do you have:

  • Experience of working within a Trading Standards service
  • Strong knowledge of trading standards legislation and enforcement practices
  • Experience of Food Standards, Feed Hygiene, or Legal Metrology enforcement
  • A relevant qualification such as the Diploma in Trading Standards (or equivalent) and qualification as a Weights and Measures Inspector
  • Experience of conducting investigations in a regulatory or enforcement environment
  • The ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and produce high-quality written reports
