The role of Personal Assistant (PA) is flexible and rewarding. You work closely with the person you support, helping them to live as independently as possible. The individual may have a learning disability, physical disability, or require support due to their age. No two jobs are the same.
You are employed by the individual through the Direct Payment, not by Neath Port Talbot Council. Your duties can include:
- Domestic chores such as cooking, cleaning and shopping
- Personal care such as washing and dressing
- Supporting the individual with activities that matter to them, which might involve going out for meals or to cafés, travelling to the cinema or social clubs, and supporting hobbies such as walking, gardening, going to the gym, and many other social activities
Working as a PA is rewarding because you make a difference in the person’s life and help them achieve their outcomes and goals. Benefits include flexible working hours that can vary from 3 hours part‑time to 37 hours full‑time per week. Hours are arranged between you and the person you support, and can include weekdays, weekends or evenings, which can be beneficial if you have other commitments such as childcare, studying or other employment.
Direct Payments are used widely across Neath and Port Talbot. Positions are available throughout the borough, covering the main areas such as Neath, Port Talbot and Pontardawe, as well as surrounding areas such as Glyncorrrwg, Seven Sisters and Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen.
In becoming a PA, you will receive all the training necessary for your role and also gain invaluable skills and on‑the‑job experience. These skills can aid future careers such as childcare, nursing, community development and social work.
