Your workstyle will be a mobile hybrid worker in this role which gives you the flexibility to work from home and from a variety of Council workplaces. We are currently seeking a highly motivated and technically competent Environmental Protection Officer to join the Public Health & Pollution Control Team within our Planning and Public Protection Service, part of the Environment & Regeneration Directorate. This is a challenging and rewarding role that plays a key part in protecting public health, the environment and local communities across Neath Port Talbot.
The role offers the opportunity to work across a wide range of specialist environmental protection functions, including air quality, industrial regulation, contaminated land and landfill monitoring. As an Environmental Protection Officer, you will support the cost‑effective and efficient delivery of Environmental Health services and contribute to the achievement of business plan, action plan and statutory performance targets, in line with best practice and legislative requirements.
Your daily routine will include:
- Implementing Local Air Quality Management duties and supporting the Council’s Air Quality Strategy
- Regulating industrial premises under the Environmental Permitting Regulations
- Investigating statutory nuisance and pollution complaints
- Undertaking contaminated land inspections and investigations
- Preparing technical reports, legal documentation and evidence for enforcement action
- Maintaining accurate records, data and monitoring equipment
Although the post does not involve direct line management responsibilities, you will be required to provide specialist technical advice and guidance to other officers and contribute to complex cases, projects and service development activities as directed.
About you
Do you have:
- Current experience of Pollution Control law enforcement, including environmental permitting, air quality or contaminated land
- Strong technical and legal knowledge of Environmental Protection and associated legislation
- Experience of investigating complaints, gathering evidence and taking enforcement action
- The ability to work independently, manage competing priorities and meet regulatory deadlines
- Excellent communication skills and experience of working with partners, stakeholders and the public
Qualifications
- A BSc or MSc in Environmental Health accredited by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health or a relevant pollution control‑related qualification
- A relevant professional/technical competence qualification, such as Diploma in Acoustics & Noise Control
