The E.ON I&C Pillar combines the npower Business Solutions & E.ON B2B businesses to create a new £5 billion revenue business serving around 60,000 I&C customers and approximately 300,000 meter points, becoming the number one B2B energy supplier in the UK. Digital Technology & Change is part of the I&C business and consists of the following teams:
- Change Management; responsible for project delivery
- Innovation & Architecture, responsible for the digitisation strategy and the provision of technical data, digital and solutions architecture expertise
- Digital Products, responsible for the end-to-end delivery of digital products via DevOps
- Engineering, Platforms & Service Management, responsible for the provision and delivery of secure digital service, platforms and expertise to facilitate product lifecycle
The Principal Digital Solution Engineer is a senior technical authority within the Engineering function, responsible for driving consistency in how enterprise platforms, data, and applications are composed into cohesive digital business products and solutions; defining and enabling how digital capabilities are assembled, integrated, and industrialised across the digital landscape for npower Business Solutions (nBS), the Industrial and Commercial (I&C) arm of E.ON UK.
In close collaboration with Architecture, the role is accountable for deriving, evangelising and embedding solution composition patterns, integration strategies, and platform usage models that ensure solutions are reusable, scalable, secure, resilient and aligned to enterprise architecture at both a group and local level. With an emphasis on repeatable cloud engineering, the role defines how cloud-native services, platforms, AI models, and digital infrastructure capabilities are consistently leveraged to build cost-effective, and future-ready digital products.
Working in close partnership with the Principal Software Engineer, Architects, Group Platform teams, and Product squads, the Principal Digital Solution Engineer:
- Defines how enterprise platforms, cloud services, data, and applications (built and bought) are assembled into repeatable and interoperable solution patterns
- Drives standardisation and optimisation of cloud and platform usage across domains
- Ensures that solutions are engineered for operability, scalability, and lifecycle sustainability within a modern DevOps and product-centric environment
- Acts as a strategic advisor, shaping solution direction and enabling the delivery of integrated, high-value digital capabilities at scale.
Solution Engineering Authority & Expertise
- Act as the technical authority for solution engineering across DT&C, defining how enterprise platforms, data, and applications are consistently composed into cohesive business solutions
- Establish and maintain solution design patterns, integration frameworks, and reusable solution constructs
- Provide strategic solution design and thought leadership across complex, cross-domain initiatives
- Ensure alignment between solution engineering, enterprise architecture, and engineering delivery
End-to-End Solution Design & Integration
- Lead the design and standardised build of complex, multi-platform solutions, ensuring coherence across products and domains
- Define and govern integration strategies, including API-led, event-driven, and data integration patterns
- Ensure solutions consistently meet functional and non-functional requirements, including scalability, resilience, security, and cost efficiency
Cloud & Platform Engineering Leadership
- Define how cloud platforms and enterprise services are utilised to enable scalable, resilient, and cost-effective solutions
- Drive consistency and optimisation in cloud engineering practices, including infrastructure, platform services, and automation
