Purpose of the Role:

Manage the day-to-day operations of the yard, including the coordination of incoming and outgoing inventory, material handling, and logistics activities. Provide effective leadership, management, and ongoing support to the operational yard team to ensure efficiency and performance targets are met. Promote and maintain a safe working culture and environment, ensuring full compliance with all Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) policies, procedures, and best practices at all times. Oversee the operation of washing and processing facilities, ensuring all activities are carried out in strict accordance with HSE requirements and operational standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the Mat Wash Operation
  • Ensure yard operatives fully comply with all daily pre-use, start-up, operational, and shut-down checks for the mat wash equipment.
  • Provide hands-on support and guidance as required to maintain efficient and effective operation of the mat washer.
  • Review daily operational paperwork, addressing any non-compliance or quality issues through coaching and performance feedback.
  • Proactively manage faults or operational concerns to minimise downtime and maintain continuity of service.
  • Ensure all weekly equipment maintenance checks are completed accurately and on schedule.
  • Establish and maintain a comprehensive maintenance programme for all equipment, including calibration and mechanical inspections, coordinating with the Logistics Manager to minimise operational disruption and downtime.
  • Manage the Smooth Running of the Yard
  • Oversee the day-to-day operation of the yard to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant working practices.
  • Monitor, identify, and address Health & Safety issues promptly, resolving matters within the team where possible and escalating or reporting safety concerns as required in a timely manner.
  • Act as the primary lead for site safety, enforcing PPE compliance, managing operational risks, and ensuring machinery and equipment are maintained to required standards.
  • Ensure the yard layout is planned, maintained, and reviewed to support HSE compliance and minimise operational risks.
  • Ensure that all local Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) are followed and reviewed regularly, updating them when required.
  • Oversee the safe and efficient loading and unloading of vehicles, carry out accurate inventory checks, and liaise closely with transport teams to meet operational deadlines.
  • Ensure the depot operates at full capability through effective planning, prioritisation, and time management.
  • Ensure the yard and facilities are kept clean, tidy, and well-organised at all times, promoting both safety and operational efficiency.
  • People Management
  • Manage the day-to-day yard operations, monitoring and reviewing progress against operational requirements and schedules of work.
  • Provide regular, timely feedback and performance updates to the Manager, highlighting progress, risks, and improvement opportunities.
  • Manage the training and development of yard teams to ensure compliance with mandatory requirements, while promoting a culture of continuous learning, capability development, and progression within the company.
  • Track yard labour hours accurately and approve employee timesheets in line with company processes.
  • Ensure all staff hold the appropriate licences, tickets, and certifications required to operate specific plant and equipment, maintaining full compliance at all times.
  • Responsible for the Health and Safety of the team and the depot within their control.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively at all levels.
  • Demonstrable experience leading teams, with the confidence to influence, motivate, and communicate clearly to deliver operational targets.
  • Strong planning and organisational skills, supporting operational excellence, efficiency, and effective time management.
  • A proactive problem-solving mindset, with the ability to assess issues and implement practical solutions.
  • Previous experience in logistics, operations, and depot or yard management within a relevant industry.
  • A strong commitment to continuously improving health & safety and sustainability performance.
  • Literate and numerate, with good IT skills and confidence using operational and reporting systems.
  • Ability to remain calm, focused, and effective under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Full, valid driving licence.
