As an Electro-Mechanical Design Engineer, you’ll play an important role in developing and integrating vehicle-borne electrical systems and components for specialist military and automotive applications.
Working alongside our Lead Engineer and wider engineering team, you’ll take designs from concept through to detailed engineering, supporting projects that demand technical precision, reliability and practical problem-solving. What you’ll be doing
You’ll support the delivery of engineering projects and product-line requirements, working closely with the Lead Engineer and liaising with customers and suppliers where required. You’ll help develop project plans and deliver engineering activities to agreed timescales, ensuring technical requirements are understood and met.
A key part of your role will involve designing and prototyping vehicle-borne electrical systems, including electrical harnesses, circuit schematics and wiring diagrams. You’ll produce engineering drawings, CAD models, Bills of Materials (BoMs) and work instructions to support the modification, installation and manufacture of vehicle systems.
You’ll also contribute to the integration of electrical systems into existing vehicle architectures, considering applications such as battery charging, power distribution, lighting and radio communications. Where required, you’ll support fault diagnosis, investigate OEM electrical systems and help develop solutions involving CAN bus technology and vehicle upgrades.
Throughout the design process, you’ll assess technical specifications, select suitable materials and ensure designs meet relevant performance, cost, weight, strength and compliance requirements. You’ll consider manufacturing and assembly feasibility from the outset, working in accordance with established quality and environmental management procedures.

We’re looking for a practical, technically capable engineer who enjoys solving problems and turning engineering requirements into workable designs.
Essential experience and skills:

A degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, an equivalent qualification or relevant practical experience.

Experience working within an automotive, aerospace or defence engineering environment.

Experience in concept development, detailed design, 3D CAD modelling and engineering drawings.

Knowledge of electrical system design, including power distribution, battery charging, lighting or communications systems.

Experience producing electrical circuit diagrams and harness drawings using appropriate design software.

Knowledge of electrical harness assembly, automotive specifications and vehicle electrical systems.

Experience with material selection, structural performance assessment and design for manufacture.

A practical understanding of workshop processes, fault diagnosis and problem-solving.

Strong planning, organisation and communication skills, with the ability to manage priorities and work collaboratively.
Desirable experience and qualifications:

Experience with military vehicle electrical systems or electrical harnessing.

Proficiency in SolidWorks and experience with electrical design software such as Arcadia or VeSys.

Experience with PLM systems, particularly EPDM or Windchill.

Knowledge of OEM CAN bus systems, diagnostic tools, CAN message analysis and vehicle integration.

Experience integrating additional electrical circuits into OEM systems or installing vehicle-borne communications equipment.

Experience with PCB prototyping or microcontroller programming.

Chartered Engineer status or working towards professional registration.

A Category C/C1 UK driving licence.
You’ll also need to be eligible for UK Security Clearance to at least SC level, with existing clearance an advantage. A willingness to travel within the UK and internationally, when required, is essential.
