Now Education are working in partnership with Wirral Met College who are seeking an experienced and dynamic Interim Head of English & Maths to lead and drive rapid improvement across English and maths provision during a key period of the academic year. This is an excellent opportunity for a highly experienced FE leader who can quickly establish credibility, lead at pace, and deliver measurable impact across GCSE and Functional Skills provision.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic and operational leadership for English and maths provision across the college.
- Lead curriculum teams to improve student achievement, attendance, retention, and progress outcomes.
- Drive rapid quality improvement initiatives within a short-term interim appointment.
- Use performance data effectively to identify risks and implement targeted interventions.
- Oversee curriculum planning, staffing, timetabling, and resource allocation.
- Lead quality assurance activities including lesson observations, learning walks, standardisation, and self-assessment.
- Support and develop staff performance through coaching and professional development.
- Work collaboratively with senior leaders and stakeholders to ensure high-quality learner outcomes.
Essential Criteria
- Proven senior leadership experience within Further Education (FE), ideally as: Head of Department, Curriculum Manager, Director of English & Maths or similar FE leadership role.
- Strong track record of leading English and/or maths provision across GCSE and Functional Skills programmes.
- Demonstrable success in improving student achievement, retention, attendance, and progress.
- Experience managing large curriculum teams.
- Proven ability to drive rapid improvement within tight timescales.
- Extensive knowledge of FE funding, curriculum, and accountability frameworks relating to English and maths.
- Strong experience using data to monitor performance and implement targeted interventions.
- Successful experience leading quality assurance and quality improvement activities.
- Experience in curriculum planning, timetabling, staffing, and budget/resource management.
- Experience managing staff performance and supporting teacher development.
- Proven strategies to improve learner engagement and attendance.
- Ability to establish credibility quickly in an interim capacity.
- Excellent communication, organisational, and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to prioritise competing demands and deliver measurable impact quickly.
- Familiarity with awarding bodies including OCR and Eduqas.
- Relevant teaching qualification and degree in English, Maths, Education, or related discipline.
- Leadership qualification desirable.
