We have a great opportunity available to join Novus, our prison education provider at HMP Stafford, working ad-hoc/casual hours as a Cover Teacher. The successful candidate will be allocated, as required, to cover multiple areas of the curriculum including Functional Skills English and Maths, Art, and Construction.

Site Information

HMP Stafford, a notable Category C men’s prison, is situated in Stafford, Staffordshire. Established in 1793, the prison has evolved significantly over the centuries. Initially designed to house a variety of offenders, it has been reclassified multiple times to meet changing demands. The prison’s capacity is approximately 750, with most inmates serving sentences ranging from two to four years. The prison offers extensive support and educational programs aimed at reducing reoffending rates.

Role Responsibilities

In this role, you will work with, and be supported by, our amazing team of dedicated professionals to provide ad-hoc cover across a diverse range of subjects. You will mentor our learners and, in turn, help them to secure future employment opportunities post-release. You will need patience, passion and understanding in your approach to our learners, who have ‘hit a bump in the road’ but want to learn and improve. As this role provides cover for multiple subject areas, you will need to be able to think on your feet to deliver interesting and engaging cover sessions.

Skills, Qualifications and Experience

To be successful in this role, you will need to:

  • Hold a teaching qualification and, where applicable, a relevant subject specialist qualification – with a commitment to obtain the outstanding qualification within 12 months. Subjects include Functional Skills English and Maths, Art, Construction and more.
  • Hold a minimum Level 2 qualification in Literacy and Numeracy.
  • Have experience creating stimulating, vibrant environments which are conducive to learning and motivational for learners
  • Have a good previous track record of achieving quality targets
  • Have a willingness to engage with and produce accurate and timely reports
  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal and communication skills
  • Have an ability to motivate and enthuse learners in the subject matter
  • Demonstrate good organisational skills to prioritise workload and meet deadlines/targets
  • Advocate for and engage consistently in positive team working
  • Have an ability to adapt, think on your feet and engage learners within cover sessions across multiple subject areas
