The steel leaving this business does not stay in the yard. It ends up as part of major infrastructure projects across the UK and internationally, with the business continuing to grow its fabrication, site and project-management operations. With turnover now around 17m, the company has been expanding its commercial and project-management capability, including the development of a London/Heathrow operation bringing together Project, Site and Commercial Managers. The commercial function is growing alongside the workload, and this is an opportunity for someone who wants to have a genuine influence on how structural steel projects are commercially managed.

Working closely with the Commercial Director, you will take ownership of the commercial side of live structural steel projects and help keep projects commercially controlled from contract award through to completion. Responsibilities include:

  • Manage the commercial performance of live structural steel projects, keeping a close eye on cost, value and profitability.
  • Own variations, change and commercial risk as projects develop.
  • Work closely with Project Managers, engineers, site teams, clients and subcontractors to keep the commercial position clear.
  • Lead contract administration, commercial reporting and forecasting.
  • Negotiate with clients and supply-chain partners to protect the company's commercial position.
  • Support the continued development of the commercial function as the business grows.

You will be close to the projects, close to the people delivering them and working directly with senior commercial leadership.

The ideal candidate will have a strong commercial background within structural steel, construction, engineering or a closely related environment, with experience managing the commercial side of live projects. Key qualifications include:

  • Managing project costs, value, variations and change.
  • Contract administration and commercial negotiations.
  • Forecasting and commercial reporting.
  • Working alongside project and site teams.
  • Dealing directly with clients and subcontractors.
  • Identifying commercial risk and protecting project margins.
  • Proven commercial experience within construction, structural steel or a related engineering environment.
  • Experience managing live projects commercially from award through to completion.
  • Strong understanding of project costs, variations, change and commercial risk.
  • Structural steel project experience.
  • Experience working closely with senior commercial leadership.
  • A relevant commercial, construction or quantity surveying qualification.

Why This Opportunity Stands Out:

  • Work directly alongside the Commercial Director.
  • Join a structural steel business that is actively expanding its project and commercial operation.
  • Take ownership of the commercial performance of live projects rather than being restricted to reporting.
  • Opportunity to help shape the development of the wider commercial function.

If you're already working commercially within structural steel or construction and want more ownership over the projects and the commercial decisions behind them, get in touch. Send over your CV and I'll give you the full picture on the business, the projects and what they're looking for.
