The London Borough of Sutton is recruiting Housing Advice & Assessment Officers to join its Housing Advice, Information and Assessment Service. This role offers the opportunity to apply professional judgement within established frameworks to deliver effective, person-centred housing advice and homelessness prevention services.
The Role
- Provide proactive, holistic housing advice and support, helping residents prevent or relieve homelessness and sustain independent living.
- Work with a varied caseload, assess housing need, make legally sound decisions, and develop solution-focused support plans.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver housing advice, homelessness prevention and casework within service standards.
- Advise on housing options, security of tenure, possession proceedings, welfare and housing benefits, and debt.
- Assess eligibility for accommodation and issue compliant decision letters.
- Develop and review personalised, solution-focused action plans.
- Work collaboratively with internal teams and external partners.
- Identify and manage risk, escalating complex cases when required.
- Maintain accurate case records and contribute to service improvement.
About You
- Strong working knowledge of Parts VI and VII of the Housing Act 1996 (as amended).
- Experience providing advice and support in complex environments.
- Able to interpret and explain legislation clearly and make consistent decisions.
- Customer-focused, empathetic and outcome-driven.
- Strong written, verbal and organisational skills.
