The London Borough of Sutton is recruiting Housing Advice & Assessment Officers to join its Housing Advice, Information and Assessment Service. This role offers the opportunity to apply professional judgement within established frameworks to deliver effective, person-centred housing advice and homelessness prevention services.

The Role

  • Provide proactive, holistic housing advice and support, helping residents prevent or relieve homelessness and sustain independent living.
  • Work with a varied caseload, assess housing need, make legally sound decisions, and develop solution-focused support plans.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver housing advice, homelessness prevention and casework within service standards.
  • Advise on housing options, security of tenure, possession proceedings, welfare and housing benefits, and debt.
  • Assess eligibility for accommodation and issue compliant decision letters.
  • Develop and review personalised, solution-focused action plans.
  • Work collaboratively with internal teams and external partners.
  • Identify and manage risk, escalating complex cases when required.
  • Maintain accurate case records and contribute to service improvement.

About You

  • Strong working knowledge of Parts VI and VII of the Housing Act 1996 (as amended).
  • Experience providing advice and support in complex environments.
  • Able to interpret and explain legislation clearly and make consistent decisions.
  • Customer-focused, empathetic and outcome-driven.
  • Strong written, verbal and organisational skills.
