Painter and Decorator

About the Role
Our client is looking for an experienced Painter & Decorator to join our in‑house repairs and maintenance team.
You’ll be responsible for delivering high‑quality painting, decorating, and finishing works across our Council‑owned homes and public buildings – ensuring residents receive a safe, comfortable, and well‑presented living environment.
This is a hands‑on, customer‑focused role where your attention to detail and pride in your work will really make a difference to the community.
The Role
- Carry out internal and external painting and decorating to a professional standard, including surface preparation, wallpapering, and finishing.
- Work independently or alongside other trades to complete repairs and refurbishment projects efficiently.
- Identify, order, and manage materials responsibly to ensure smooth completion of works.
- Respond to urgent repair requests, including making good any immediate defects or damage.
- Ensure full compliance with Health & Safety procedures, including the safe use of paints, solvents, ladders, and access equipment.
- Maintain and care for all tools, equipment, PPE, and Council vehicles in line with departmental procedures.
- Provide excellent customer service, communicating effectively with tenants, colleagues, and supervisors.
- Support apprentices or less experienced colleagues where required, promoting a culture of teamwork and quality workmanship.
The Candidate
Essential qualifications and experience:
- Apprentice‑trained and time‑served Painter and Decorator, holding an NVQ Level 3 or City & Guilds qualification (or equivalent).
- Demonstrable experience in domestic and commercial painting and decorating, ideally within social housing or local authority environments.
- Skilled in all aspects of the trade, including surface prep, wallpaper hanging, glossing, emulsioning, and minor associated repairs.
- Knowledge of Health & Safety requirements, including COSHH regulations and working at height.
- Ability to complete job sheets, timesheets, and electronic records accurately.
- Strong customer care and communication skills.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
Desirable:
- Experience of working with other trades on multi‑skill maintenance teams.
- Willingness to work occasional overtime to meet service demands.
