Quantity Surveyor – Structural Steel & Rail
Location: Leicester
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience
Job Type: Permanent, Full Time
The Opportunity
Some projects are measured in tonnes of steel. Others are measured in deadlines, margins and the ability to keep a complex contract commercially on track.
This is an opportunity for an experienced Quantity Surveyor to join an established construction business and play a key role within its commercial team, supporting the successful financial delivery of projects across the business.
Working closely with Contract and Project Managers, you’ll be involved across the commercial lifecycle — from valuations and variations through to cost reporting, procurement and final accounts.
The role will also provide commercial support to the rail division, giving you exposure to a varied portfolio of projects and contract environments.
The Role
As Quantity Surveyor, you’ll support the Contract and Project Management teams with the day-to-day commercial and financial management of projects.
You’ll be responsible for helping ensure contract requirements are followed, financial information remains accurate and commercial risks are identified and managed before they become problems.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Providing Quantity Surveying support to Contract and Project Managers
- Assisting with contract programmes, applications and key commercial deadlines
- Administering valuations and pricing variations
- Maintaining accurate contract financial reports and cost value reconciliations
- Monitoring job costings against quoted figures and investigating anomalies
- Supporting procurement activity and liaising with the purchasing department
- Assisting with applications, final accounts and contract reviews
- Liaising with clients, internal departments and members of the professional team
- Attending internal and external meetings to support commercial requirements
- Developing and maintaining knowledge of relevant contract conditions, including NEC and JCT
About You
We’re looking for a Quantity Surveyor who combines strong commercial awareness with a methodical and organised approach.
You’ll be comfortable working with project teams, analysing financial information and communicating with a range of stakeholders. Experience within construction and structural steel is important, while exposure to rail projects would be an advantage.
Essential Experience
- Previous Quantity Surveying experience within construction and structural steel
- Knowledge of NEC and JCT contracts
- Relevant Quantity Surveying qualification
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent organisation and time management
- Accurate and methodical approach to financial and commercial information
- Good understanding of wider construction processes
- Strong Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel, Word and Microsoft Project
- Full UK driving licence
Desirable
- CSCS card
- Previous experience supporting rail-related contracts
Why This Role?
This is a chance to take a key commercial position within a business where your input will directly contribute to the successful delivery of projects.
You’ll have the opportunity to work across structural steel and rail, develop your experience across NEC and JCT contracts, and work closely with experienced Contract and Project Management teams.
