We’re looking for a Treasurer to provide financial leadership to our charity that supports the Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise sector in Wakefield District through specialist support, high-impact contracts and grant making.
We are operating in socially, economically and politically challenging times. The VCSE sector is facing increased demand, reduced resources, and greater complexity across our communities. At the same time, we are looking to build stronger, more coordinated relationships with partners, working together to enhance what we deliver and bring even greater value to the organisations and communities we serve. A strong Treasurer, as part of our Board of Trustees, will help us navigate this landscape with confidence.
What are we looking for?
- Strong understanding of charity finances, accounting principles, and best practice in financial governance.
- Previous experience as a Treasurer is welcomed but not essential; commitment to Nova’s values, financial integrity, and strengthening the VCSE sector is what matters most.
- Strategic thinking with the ability to provide clear, practical financial guidance to the Board.
- Ability to work collaboratively with the Chair, CEO, Finance Manager, and Trustees.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to translate complex financial information into clear advice.
- Commitment to transparency and accountability in all financial matters.
- Openness to exploring enterprising opportunities and supporting new income development.
Ideally, the Treasurer would also have the below but these are not essential:
- Knowledge of charity accounting software, procedures, and reporting requirements.
- Leadership experience in financial planning, audits, risk management, or income generation.
- Experience of public sector contracts and procurement frameworks.
- Experience supporting professional development in finance teams.
What will you be doing?
The Treasurer will join seven leaders from VCSE organisations to provide strategic financial direction to Nova Wakefield District. They will work closely with the Board, CEO, Finance Manager and Accountant to ensure the organisation’s finances are well-managed, transparent and modelling best practice for the local VCSE sector. Since April 2025, Nova has secured over £790,000 of income. The Treasurer will play a key role in planning for the future, including budgets, reserves, long-term planning, and exploring new income streams and enterprising approaches to strengthen Nova’s financial resilience. They are also responsible for chairing our Finance Subcommittee.
Nova is the biggest local funder of VCSE organisations in Wakefield District, excluding local authorities. The Treasurer will have a unique opportunity to support this work by providing oversight of financial activities whilst supporting the Board to ensure sustainability, and maximise the most impact from our income and funds. Our current Business Plan runs until 2026. An important part of this role will be supporting the Board and CEO in developing the next business and strategic plan, ensuring Nova continues to deliver impact while adapting to opportunities and challenges in the VCSE sector.
