About Us

The Department of Public Works manages 23,000 kilometers of roads and highways, 4,100 bridges, and provincial ferries. Our District Highway Operations Division plays a critical role in managing various programs, functions and activities throughout our province, including snow and ice control services, road maintenance and repair services, and approval of various permits.

In the Central District, our administrative team is growing and recruiting for a Clerk to support our payroll and accounting operations. As the Clerk, you are one of our key team players who supports the overall efficiency of our operations.

About Our Opportunity

As the Payroll and Accounting Clerk, you are the backbone to supporting our department operations. You have the important responsibility of processing a broad range of payroll and accounting documents, while ensuring accurate data is processed and completed within tight deadlines.

Primary Accountabilities

In accordance with the CUPE Collective Agreement and Departmental Guidelines, you will:

  • enter hours for CUPE payroll, verify time entry reports, and enter travel expenses and reimbursements for employees;
  • process vendor invoices and credit memos;
  • enter journal vouchers, inventory issues and reconcile reports;
  • ensure proper documentation and signing authority are received;
  • ensure that our records are maintained and the information is relayed to the proper individual for action; and
  • provide backup coverage for the payroll and accounting team as needed and provide rotating break relief for the Secretary.

We operate in a fast-paced environment with strict deadlines and we need your ability to multitask and deal with changing priorities to keep our team on track and employees and vendors paid on time.

Qualifications and Experience

You have four (4) years of related experience in a computerized payroll and accounting environment. An equivalent combination of training and experience will be considered.

As the ideal candidate, you must demonstrate a working knowledge of:

  • accounting and payroll principles; and
  • spreadsheet software and creation, word processing, and email applications.

Experience with different SAP modules is required, while knowledge and familiarity with various Nova Scotia Government Policies are desirable qualities to be considered.

You are a self-motivated individual who works both independently with minimal supervision and participates fully as an effective team player. You are accurate in your work and have well-developed time management and organizational skills to meet established payroll deadlines and priorities. Consistently you maintain confidentiality in all you do. You possess problem solving abilities and analyze and present information in a clear, concise manner. Your exceptional interpersonal and communication skills will assist you when liaising with staff and responding to staff and vendor inquiries, both verbally and in writing. You consistently maintain a professional and courteous disposition and hold a high standard for client and customer service.

We will assess all qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Equivalency

An equivalent combination of relevant training and experience will be considered. Related equivalencies include, but are not limited to:

  • A completed related diploma and two (2) years of experience

Working Conditions

  • Normal work week is 35 hours/week, 7 hours/day.
  • May be required to work overtime on occasion.
  • Typically located in a comfortable office environment.
  • Much of the time is spent in a comfortable position with frequent opportunity to move about.
  • Regularly reads and interprets multiple sources of information, regular requirement to type, read and work on a computer.
  • May experience pressure with deadlines and need for accuracy.

Pay Grade: CL 18

Salary Range: $1,684.00- $1,884.17Bi-Weekly
