In years 2 through 4 you will gain an in‑depth understanding of NOV business processes, taking part in all aspects of machining and repair work carried out within our Montrose repair facility while rotating through different departments. Starting in the machining and repair workshops, you will see the full lifecycle of our products, from initial inspection and disassembly through machining, refurbishment, final inspection and shipping of repaired drilling equipment designed to operate in extreme offshore conditions.

Your hands‑on academic training plan is where learning and development really begins. You will take part in a 4‑year training plan where both the offsite training provider and NOV will monitor your progress, supporting and guiding you to become a successful and first‑class CNC Machinist.

Year One

You will spend the year working towards your hands‑on SVQ Level 2 Qualification offsite. This qualification will create the foundations for progression, including an understanding of general engineering principles, machining fundamentals, health and safety, and quality requirements.

You will be based onsite at Montrose, joining the NOV team and developing your skills under the guidance of experienced machinists and supervisors. You will gain first‑hand exposure to CNC and manual machining operations, including setting up and operating CNC machines, understanding CNC programming fundamentals, reading engineering drawings, measuring and inspecting components, and learning NOV procedures, policies and values. During year four, you will work with limited supervision and take an active role in machining and repair activities, from component assessment and machining through to inspection and documentation. Assuming successful completion of the apprenticeship and achievement of the required academic standards, you will graduate as a fully trained and skilled NOV CNC Machinist.
