A fantastic opportunity to join a highly regarded Legal Aid law firm and develop specialist experience in Court of Protection health and welfare work. You will work closely with experienced lawyers, supporting vulnerable clients and helping to protect and promote their rights.

About MJC Law: MJC Law is a specialist firm who provide expert advice in Court of Protection (health and welfare), mental health and community care law. We hold Legal Aid Civil Contracts in Mental Health and Community Care and operate from offices in Nottingham and Leeds. Our directors are nationally recognised in their fields, with rankings in Chambers and Partners and Legal 500, and the firm was proud to win Legal Aid Law Firm of the Year at the 2021 Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year Awards. At our core, we are driven by a clear purpose: to provide high-quality legal services to some of the most vulnerable people in society. We are committed to Legal Aid work and to creating a supportive, fair and empowering environment for both our clients and our colleagues.

The Role: We are recruiting a Paralegal to be based at our Nottingham (Edwalton) office, supporting more senior lawyers with the administration and progression of legal casework, primarily within Court of Protection health and welfare and related publicly funded work. The role combines hands-on legal work with strong compliance and client care responsibilities. You will help ensure files are progressed efficiently, clients are supported sensitively, and Legal Aid Agency and regulatory requirements are met.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting solicitors with the progression of legal aid and private casework
  • Opening and closing files, conflict checks and client care documentation
  • Attending clients, taking instructions and assisting with case preparation
  • Drafting legal documents, including correspondence, witness statements and instructions to counsel
  • Undertaking legal research as required
  • Managing Legal Aid Agency funding, billing and compliance on files
  • Accurate time recording and file management
  • Handling client calls and new enquiries on a rota basis
  • General administrative tasks to support casework
  • Assisting with compliance with SRA Standards and Regulations, Legal Aid Agency contracts and SQM standards
  • Contributing to firm-wide activities such as networking, business development and (where appropriate) social media or website content

What we are looking for: We are looking for a motivated and conscientious individual who is committed to access to justice and has a genuine interest in the areas of work that we do.

  • A law degree, Graduate Diploma in Law, or working towards qualification via CILEx or the SQE route
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent client care skills, with the ability to work sensitively with vulnerable clients
  • Strong organisational skills and excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Good IT skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and work under pressure while meeting time and financial targets
  • A demonstrable commitment to Legal Aid and the firm’s specialist practice areas
  • Legal Practice Course (LPC) or equivalent professional qualification
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, including: Mental Capacity Act 2005; Mental Health Act 1983; Care Act 2014
  • Understanding of SRA Standards and Regulations and Legal Aid Agency contract requirements
  • Previous paralegal or legal work experience
  • Experience of working with vulnerable clients
  • Experience using case management systems
  • Ability to travel for work-related purposes (a full UK driving licence is desirable)
  • Ability to work effectively from home when required

What we offer:

  • Competitive salary (dependent on experience)
  • 25 days’ annual leave, plus bank holidays
  • Ongoing training and development in our specialist areas
  • Supportive supervision and a collaborative team culture
  • The opportunity to grow with a well-established and respected specialist firm

We recognise that this work can be emotionally demanding and place a strong emphasis on teamwork, support and wellbeing.
