Job description

The appointee, in collaboration with other Consultants, will be expected to fulfill the following duties within the agreed Job Plan:

  1. To provide a comprehensive Virology service, including full clinical liaison, to:
  • Clinical services within Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.
  • General Practitioners and other healthcare providers in the Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Integrated Care System.
  • Other users of the Microbiology service as per Service Level Agreement.
  • To take a lead role in developing clinical liaison with specialist clinical teams to meet increasing demands, including participation in guideline formulation and review.
  • Share in administrative duties associated with running a clinical laboratory.
  • Participate in day-to-day Infection Control activities for NUH, support investigation and management of viral disease outbreaks, and liaise with local CCDCs.
  • Involved in collecting and reviewing surveillance and epidemiological data with NUH Infection Prevention and Control Team and UKHSA.
  • Actively pursue research in medical virology and epidemiology.
  • Involved in training specialty trainees, FY2s, scientific, and senior scientist trainees.
  • Pursue Continuous Professional Development (CPD) and participate in annual reviews and appraisals.
  • Contribute to teaching microbiology to undergraduates and postgraduates at the University of Nottingham.

    Training & Qualifications

    • Full GMC registration, eligible for the Specialist Register or CCT in Microbiology (or expected within 6 months).
    • Full/specialist registration with GMC (or eligible within six months).
    • UK-trained applicants: CCT or within six months of award; non-UK trained: evidence of equivalence.
    • Clinical Scientist: HCPC registration and PhD in relevant area.
    • FRCPath in Virology or equivalent.
    • Active CPD participation.

    Clinical Skills/Experience

    • Technical and clinical skills as described in the job description.
    • Effective communication with patients, families, and health professionals.
    • Experience in multidisciplinary infection teams.
    • Good written and verbal communication skills.
