We are looking for 2 more volunteers to help mentor at our Code Dojo at Nottingham Central Library. A mentor doesn’t need to know how to code. They just need to have a passion for the CoderDojo mission and the drive to make things happen. You’ll be helping run a regular Code Dojo Session for children aged 7-17 years on Tuesdays, from 4.30pm to 5.30pm.
Why we want you
We are looking for volunteers to help at the Code Dojo at Nottingham Central Library. Too much structure and rigid organization can stifle creativity. Most Dojos have a feel of organized chaos that’s an energetic blend of imagination, experimentation, and learner‑led skill development. At a Dojo, attendees learn by working on projects in an informal atmosphere, talking amongst themselves, and collaborating. Chatting and making friends is encouraged.
To be successful, a Dojo needs mentors — adult volunteers, with or without technical skills — who provide support, guidance, and encouragement for young people to complete their projects and develop their skills.
What you will be doing:
- Supporting Code Dojo Session
- Supporting children in Code Dojo projects such as Scratch, Python and HTML/CSS
- Assist with the set up and clearing of the sessions each week
- Collaborate with other volunteers and staff to deliver the sessions and ensure cover for all sessions.
- Comply fully with existing policies of Nottingham County Council
The skills you need:
- Are warm, friendly and patient individual
- Can relate to young children and their families and interact with them in a positive manner
- Have confidence using computers; you don’t need to be experienced in coding, but you need confidence in using computers and the ability to learn programs like Scratch
- Ability to work with other volunteers and Nottingham City Council staff
